Recommendation criteria The following criteria are to be used as a guide in determining the placement of students in grade 9.

English English 9 classes will be non-leveled with an “honors component” available for all students. The mission of Stratford Public Schools is to foster academic and personal excellence through a curriculum designed to challenge all students. To fulfill that mission, all students in the non-leveled (heterogeneously grouped) English 1 course will be offered the option to earn honors distinction and honors credit on their high school transcript.

English Honors Component Open to all students enrolled in English 1. Assignments with higher expectations for the honors component. Honors credit will be given with regular feedback during the course.

Mathematics, Social Studies, & science Students will be placed in either honors or college prep courses based on eighth grade teacher recommendations

Studies In science All grade 9 students will be required to take a full year of science (Studies in Science A and Studies in Science B) Students recommended for honors Studies in Science A and B must be enrolled concurrently in either Geometry or Algebra 2

Common Core Math Support: Mathematics Integrated Math: Placement determined by benchmark scores, teacher recommendation, student ability and grades. Common Core Math Support: Placement determined by teacher recommendation.

READING/WRITING Students in all grades are placed into this course as a result of scores on district and standardized measures and performance in school. Books A, B, C, D, E, & F

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Credit Distribution Requirement: English - 4 Units Mathematics - 3 Units Social Studies - 3 Units Science - 2 Units Personal Finance - .5 Units Health & Physical Education - 1.5 Units Arts or Career and Technical Education - 1 Unit Electives - 6 Units Total = 21.0 Units

Scheduling Process Middle school counselors conduct a classroom lesson to review the Program of Studies. Middle school counselors hold individual conferences with students to review recommendations and elective course selections. High school registration form is sent home for a parent/guardian signature. Any questions or concerns please contact your child’s middle school counselor.
