Text 1: “Rice that Filipinos Grow and Eat” Author/s: John C. de Leon Title of Journal/Publication: RESEARCH PAPER SERIES No. 2011-01 Web Address: http://dirp3.pids.gov.ph/ris/rps/pidsrp1101.pdf

Main Idea: Supporting details: This paper introduces rice to the reader and analyzes the changes it has gone through the past 100 years in the hands of varietal improvement science. Supporting details: Over time, its many types included landrace rice, purelineselection rice, cross breed rice, semi dwarf rice, hybrid rice, new-plant-type rice and designer rice- choices ranging from traditional to the modern and futuristic. Of course, there must be rice for daily consumption and rice for important occasions. There is nonstick rice or the glutinous opposite; well milled or brown rice; red rice; aromatic rice; rice rich in micronutrients; golden rice; the generic fancy or specialty rice; and even with healing wonders or medicinal properties.

Text 2: “Rice in the Filipino Diet and Culture” Author/s: Filomena V. Aguilar Jr. Title of Journal/Publication: RESEARCH PAPER SERIES No. 2008-03 Web Address: http://dirp3.pids.gov.ph/ris/rps/pidsrp0803.pdf

Main Idea: Supporting details: Food and culture are intimately related and mutually constitutive. Supporting details: However, their precise relationship is a matter of debate. Moreover, the relationship between food and culture is subjected to the specific time and places and must therefore be understood as a historical process.

Text 3: “Rice and Philippine Politics” Author/s: Ponciano S. Intal Jr. and Marissa C. Garcia Title of Journal/Publication: RESEARCH PAPER SERIES No. 2008-01 Web Address: http://dirp3.pids.gov.ph/ris/rps/pidsrp0801.pdf

Main Idea: Rice has been a pivotal political commodity since the commonwealth period because of its importance as a staple food and a calorie source for the majority, especially the low-income groups. As well as a source of employment and income to people that comprise the demand and supply.

Supporting Details: As a result, food security and price stability continue as twin priority objectives of the Philippine government regimes. Results of the analysis show that the price of rice has been a significant determinant in election results since the 1950’s with the exception of 1998, where from the incumbent administration failed to win the elections. In addition, reliance by the Philippine government primarily on price instruments to achieve its rice objectives and to protect farmer and consumer interest has not resulted in any substantial improvements in rice production.

Text 4: “Promoting inclusive growth through the 4P’s” Author/s: Celia M. Reyes, Aubrey D. Tabuga, Christian D. Mina and Ronina D. Asis Title of Journal/Publication: RESEARCH PAPER SERIES No. 2015-01 Web Address: http://dirp3.pids.gov.ph/webportal/CDN/PUBLICATIONS/pidsrp1501.pdf

Main Idea: The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program (4P’s) is the Philippine government’s most expensive social protection program to date. Supporting details: It is centered on two objectives- social assistance and social development. As of the end of 2013, an estimated amount of PHP 120 billion has already been expended for the program. The program provides cash grants to poor families to help them meet immediate needs.

Synthesis: Rice, a very important crop has gone several changes as time goes by. It is also very popular among Filipinos and branded as to be the staple food of most of the residents here in the country. Rice is also associated with the Philippine politics in the sense of it affects the number of votes a politician could receive if he/she is able to give rice to the masses. The 4P’s is one of the Philippine Government’s most successful programs so far. This 4P’s provides social assistance and social development to those beneficiaries of the program. Families who are supported by this receive cash grants which they use to buy the most basic need, rice. Rice production plays a vital role in the lives of Filipinos and as well as to the society. It became as the most important need of the people mostly from Asian countries. It is often consumed for the optimal development of rice-eaters.
