Reading coverage 30-50 months This is a breakdown of the reading coverage which should be taught to ensure children meet the 30-50 month age band in Reading. www.earlybirdyeducation.com

30-50- Reading www.earlybirdyeducation.com Story structure: Book handling: Phonics: Read familiar stories and rhymes. Talk about familiar characters and begin to ask questions e.g. what will happen next. Read stories regularly to build up attention and recall. Develop exposure to books large and small. Explore how to handle a book and spend time looking at print and illustrations. Children confident in phase1 phonics. They are exposed to different sounds they hear and different letter representation in their immediate environment. 30-50- Reading Enjoys rhyming and rhythmic activities, shows an awareness of rhyme and alliteration and can recognise rhythm in spoke words. Listens to and joins in stories ad poems, one-to-one and also ii small groups. Joins in repeated refrains and anticipates key events and phrases in rhymes and stories. Beginning to be aware of the way stories are structured and suggest how a story might end. Listens to stories with increasing attention and recall. Describes main story settings, events and principle characters. Shows interest in illustrations and print in books and print in the environment. Recognises familiar words and signs such as own name and advertising logos. Looks at books independently and handles books carefully. Knows information can be relayed in the form of print. Holds books the correct way up ad turns pages. Knows that print carries meaning and, in English is read from left to right and top to bottom. Comprehension: Rhyme and alliteration. Reading: Different texts and features are exposed in all areas:- poems, information, story and letters. Demonstrate talking through pictures and begin to retell familiar stories, giving meaning to the illustrations in books. Begin to question the children once they are familiar with a text and begin to extenuate words and expression. Stop and pause and relevant parts to create suspense and build up tension to develop understanding. Allow children to join in repeated refrains and rhyming patterns and expose to alliteration and rhyme in spoken words.
