Chemistry Laboratory Safety Rules

1. Protect Your Eyes Appropriate eye protection must be worn at all times! Goggles will be provided.

2. Wear Appropriate Protective Clothing Lab aprons can be used to protect YOU and your clothing Loose clothing should not be worn because it may dip into chemicals or fall into a flame and catch fire…we have seen many hoodie sleeves singed this way!

3. Wear shoes that cover your feet…NO EXCEPTIONS! Sandals and open-toed shoes do not protect your feet from broken glass and spilled chemicals.

4. Do not apply cosmetics, eat, or drink in the lab. These activities are ways by which you can accidentally ingest harmful chemicals

5. Do not taste any chemical!

6. Always ADD ACID to water—why?? acid water Acids are dense…they “sink” into the water and soon are diluted by the larger volume of water. Acids produce a lot of heat when mixing with water…small amounts of water added to larger amount of acid may produce so much heat the concentrated acid boils and splashes back!

7. Work with volatile chemicals under a fume hood.

8. Check glassware for “stars” or cracks.

9. Heat test tubes at an angle. Do NOT angle towards you or your lab partner's face. Contents heat quickly and will shoot out the end of the test tube, creating a very dangerous situation.

10. Handle hot glassware with gloves or beaker tongs.

11. Never leave a burner or hot plate unattended.

12. Do not smell any chemicals directly! Smell chemicals only if your teacher specifically tells you to do so, then use your hand to WAFT the vapor to your nose.

13. Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving. This rule applies even if you have been wearing gloves!

14. Know the hazards of the materials being used. Read and reread labels carefully to make sure that you are using the right chemical. Pay attention to the warnings about the chemicals used in the lab.

15. Tie Back Loose Hair Dangling hair can fall into the Bunsen burner and catch fire or can fall into a chemical solution P.S. Burning hair REALLY STINKS!

16. Know the safety equipment Eye wash fountain Safety shower Fire extinguisher Emergency exits

17. Demonstrate safe behavior a. Obey all safety instructions given by your teacher or found in your experimental procedure. b. Clean up spills immediately IF you know how. If you are uncertain how to clean up a spill or if a large spill occurs, notify your teacher immediately.

17. Demonstrate safe behavior Before leaving the lab:

17. Demonstrate safe behavior Before leaving the lab: c. Return equipment and chemicals to their proper places

17. Demonstrate safe behavior Before leaving the lab: c. Return equipment and chemicals to their proper places d. Be sure to replace the lids to all containers

17. Demonstrate safe behavior Before leaving the lab: c. Return equipment and chemicals to their proper places d. Be sure to replace the lids to all containers e. Clean up your work area

18. Know how to dispose of waste a. Dispose of all waste materials according to your instructional procedure or your teacher’s instructions ? ? ? ?

18. Know how to dispose of waste b. Why should you NEVER return extra or leftover chemicals to the stock bottle they came from?

19. Report any accidents or unsafe conditions immediately!

20. Remember that the lab is a place for serious work! Careless behavior may endanger yourself and others and will not be tolerated!
