Principles of Design Visual Art

Principles of Design The principles of design are the ways the art elements are arranged to create a successful artwork.—JCPS Humanities The principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art—thegetty.edu

Symmetrical BALANCE also known as formal balance, organizes the art elements so that one side duplicates or mirrors the other side.

Asymmetrical Balance Also known as informal balance organizes the art elements so that they have equal visual weight on both sides without being the same.

RADIAL BALANCE the art elements branch or radiate out from a central point.

BALANCE Which is Which?

emphasizes differences between art elements. Contrast emphasizes differences between art elements.

EMPHASIS dominance, or the development of a main idea or center of interest (focal point). Focal areas emphasize the most important aspect of a work of art. Visual emphasis on a focal area can be achieved by using the strongest light and dark value contrasts. It can also be developed by using other strong contrasts of art elements, such as shape.

REPETITION combining art elements so that the same elements are used over and over

Pattern the repetition of an art element typically shapes ,lines, or colors—used for surface decoration or ornamentation.

Rhythm a way of repeating art elements to produce the look and feel of rhythmic movement with a visual tempo or beat.

MOVEMENT look of action or to cause the viewer’s eye to sweep over the artwork in a certain manner.

PROPORTION the relationship in size of one component of an artwork to another.

Variety the quality achieved when art elements are joined in various combinations to increase visual interest.

UNITY Unity refers to the visual quality of wholeness or oneness that is achieved through the effective use of the art elements and principles of design.
