Holidays In Great Britain

The first of January, New Year’s Day, is a big holiday in Great Britain. People celebrate New Year’s Eve in every family. Friends usually come on that day. They have a good dinner. After dinner there are apples, other fruit, and different sweets to eat. In London people go to the Trafalgar Square. In this square they see a great tree brightly decorated with little lamps. When the largest clock of London — Big Ben — begins to strike twelve, the people in the square join their hands and sing. They also wish a Happy New Year to each other. New Year is one of the favourite holidays for many people in Great Britain.

Christmas Day, December 25, is probably the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends give each other presents. A typical Christmas lunch includes turkey with cranberry sauce and pudding. On the eve of Christmas children hang their stockings, so that Santa Claus could put presents into them. Christmas is a merry family holiday for all the people of Great Britain.

St. Valentine’s Day comes on February 14 St. Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is a special time when people tell each other that they love them and care about them. To celebrate this holiday people send special cards with romantic messages and give their sweethearts small gifts, flowers, chocolates.

St. Patrick’s Day ( March 17) St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year on March 17th in honor of Saint Patrick of Ireland. He was the patron of Ireland, and a saint who brought Christianity to the nation. Saint Patrick is also known for driving the snakes away from Ireland. The national symbol of Ireland is shamrock and according to legend Saint Patrick chose this plant to illustrate the Holy Trinity to the Irish.

Easter is the time for holidays, festivals and time for giving chocolate Easter eggs, the day of parties, and above all a celebration that Jesus raised from the dead and lives forever. Easter is a feast that is not always held on the same date each year. Easter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. Easter is much more than ordinary holiday.

Teacher: Peter, why aren’t you raising your hand? Peter: Because if I raise my hand then you’ll be all alone. There are many holidays during the year, but none as funny as April Fool’s Day. Traditionally this holiday is celebrated worldwide on the 1st of April. On this day people take delight in playing pranks on their friends, relatives, neighbors or classmates. Most popular jokes include sending someone to look for things that don’t exist or making people to believe hilarious things.
