Bhagavad-Gita Wisdom literature

Meaning of title “song of the lord” -most important text in the Hindu faith -found in the middle of the Mahabharata

Key terms Non attached work: performance of the duty without concern for results Castes: rigid social structure in which each group has specified responsibilities

Main characters Sanjaya: narrator Sri Krishna: brother-in-law to Arjuna, god in disguise Arjuna: hero of warrior caste

Basic plot Arjuna is presenting an argument with Sri Krishna because he fears fighting against his family and friends. Krishna explains to Arjuna that as a warrior it is his duty to fight. Krishna tells Arjuna that the eternal soul has no reason for grief over the temporary body. Krishna then explains that even if Arjuna was to die in war, he would still attain heaven because he has done his rightful duty.

Moral The ultimate goal of enlightenment is achieved by Wise Action. Wise Action is when you do your duty only, without personal attachment. One can act without personal attachment by pleasuring God. This frees a person from impurity and sin.

A true hero acts without CONCERN for the effects on his own life.
