Rate how you feel about poetry and figurative language. 1=I do not know; I have never study it 2=It is not fun; I hate similes and metaphors 3=I find it very easy 4=I love reading (or writing) poetry

What is poetry and figurative language? literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm Poetry is used in all types of music and song lyrics Language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal meaning Figurative language is used in all types of poetry and song lyrics

Poetry Structure What makes a poem a poem? Stanzas! Rhyme! (sometimes)  “A Minor Bird” by Robert Frost (pg. 554) I have wished a bird would fly away, And not sing by my house all day: Have clapped my hands at him from the door When it seemed as if I could bear no more. The fault must partly have been in me. The bird was not to blame for his key. And of course there must be something wrong In wanting to silence any song.

Rhyme Types End Rhyme- two or more lines that have the same ending sound Slant Rhyme- when vowel sounds rhyme, but the words do not Internal Rhyme- rhyming within the line

Rhyme Scheme -the pattern made by the rhyming words at the end of lines in a poem “A Minor Bird” by Robert Frost (pg. 554) I have wished a bird would fly away, A And not sing by my house all day: A Have clapped my hands at him from the door B  When it seemed as if I could bear no more. B The fault must partly have been in me. C The bird was not to blame for his key. C And of course there must be something wrong D In wanting to silence any song. D

Types of Poems -Narrative-tells a story -Ballad-a narrative meant to be sung -Free Verse-poem spoken without rhyme that sounds like everyday speech -Extended Metaphor-a poem where the entire thing is a metaphor that represents something

Simile -a comparison that uses like or as Example: "Sodapop looks like a movie star." -The Outsiders “He was as solitary as an oyster.” –p. 2 in ACC

Personification -giving human characteristics to nonhuman things

Hyperbole -an exaggeration used to make a point Example: My brother and I ate enough food that evening to feed an entire village.

Symbolism -an idea represented by an object or thing Example: dove=peace Spring=rebirth Winter=death, dying White=purity Black/gray=dark times

Sound Devices: Sound Devices are literary devices that manipulate the way the words sound when read. They include: Rhyme Rhythm Repetition Alliteration Onomatopoeia

Repetition -repeating a word or phrase to add rhythm or stress (to emphasize) an idea “Winter Moon” by Langston Hughes How thin and sharp is the moon tonight! How thin and sharp and ghostly white Is the slim curved crook of the moon tonight!

Alliteration -repeating the first sound in words Example: -p. 556 “… the slim curved crook of the moon…”
