John Dalton By: Jasmine and Kelsey

Biography of John Dalton John Dalton was born in early September 1766 in Eaglesfield, Cumberland, England. He was the youngest child of Joseph Dalton and Deborah Greenup to survive to adulthood. He went to John Fletcher’s Grammar school. By the age of 12, he was doing lectures in public and was a teacher at Quaker boarding school. He continued to teach at this school for the next ten years there until he moved to Manchester and got a teaching position there. He also joined the literacy and philosophy society. Through this society, he was able to be involved in very high level conversations and labs. He began to write papers to explain his understanding and knew knowledge. His first paper was on colour blindness which was, and is still often referred to as “Daltonism.” Into his life he was also very interested in meteorology which is what he based his atomic theory on. John Dalton has proposed the Atomic theory in the year 1808.

Contributions John Dalton made the most important discovery in science called the Atomic theory. The theory is where matter is composed of atoms differing weights and combine in simple ratio’s by weight. The atomic theory says: all matter consists of tiny particles, atoms are indestructible and unchangeable, elements are characterized by the mass of their atoms, and when elements react, their atoms combine in simple, whole- number ratios.

Parts of the Atomic Theory The Five parts to the Atomic Theory are: 1. All matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. 2. Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in size, mass, and other properties.' 3.Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed. 4.Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds. 5.In chemical reactions atoms are combined separated or rearranged.

Through John Dalton’s life, even though he was credited for discovering many things, and given many honors, he always lived a very modest lifestyle. When he died in 1844 where there were 40 000 people in his funeral procession.
