Market Research By Callum L. Lewis

An overview of Orangebox Orangebox are a company that focuses on the workplace and ensuring that their furniture can adapt to the demands of a forever changing environment, they achieve this through their customer centric approach to understanding and adapting to their influences, and constant communication with their customers as they believe that it is key to success in for the future. Orangebox realise that work is becoming more collaborative and this is evident with some of their furniture designs, more notably their Acoustic Pods and their Soft Seating range which includes larger seating areas which allows for more communication between working that is good for productivity. The majority of Orangebox’s range have a theme of collaboration and working together. Ergonomics With Help from Active Ergonomics for over 12 years, Orangebox have been designing their products to provide a better life at work which will in turn increase productivity in the workplace. Orangebox have a lot of resources so they are able to design and manufacture the most ergonomic, comfortable furniture that fit perfectly in an office space. End of Life Orangebox set out to be more pro-active in recycling, in 2007 they went about setting up their own recycling centre so their products did not have just the one life, meaning that each product can be disassembled and the materials re-used for other products. It is also possible for their products to be donated to the St. David's Foundation if it is more energy efficient to do so. ‘The Ultimate aim is to eliminate the concept of waste’. 1 Callum L. Lewis

Dune 02 This range is built off a four-star cast aluminium base and can be used at both occasional and meeting height with glass or wood tops, in a variety of shapes and sizes and with glides or castors as illustrated. Dune’s cast leg shares the same design language as many other landscape pieces, so that it can be combined successfully with a wide variety of pieces from this range. – Taken from http://www.orangebox.com/product_range/occasional_tables/occasional_tables_dune The materials used for Orangebox products can be either biodegradable or fully recycled and used for other high quality products without having a lower life span compared to ‘virgin’ materials. This means that consideration of materials is very important and research is a priority. Aluminium is used quite frequently on Orangebox products and can be used in a variety of different ways when designing a new product for this company. Occasional tables can be used as a work space for workers but this would mean that the individual would have to arch his/her back in order to see the screen correctly and this would lead to them having health issues in the long term if frequently used. Whilst working on soft seating furniture a worked may choose to use their laps as a workspace, as they would be tilting their head and looking down strain would occur in the neck and also cause discomfort and possible injury. 4 Callum L. Lano LSQ-12 5 Callum L. Lewis Multi-functionality is becoming a bigger objective when it comes to designing for office furniture, instead of having four or five different products that have one function designers are creating a single product that has a variation of different functions. I believe that this is the right direction to go in for Orangebox as they have already begun this with some of their office chairs and their acoustic pods. The designs of most Orangebox tables make it easier for wheelchair users to access and work on, this is an important thing to take into account when designing furniture and for the brief it is no different, the work table would need to be accessible to all. 5 Callum L. Lewis

Competition Many of the competing products of occasional tables use the similar materials to Orangebox. The majority of the competition do not target the same demographic as Orangebox, this means that the quality of life for these products are not as good as those of Orangebox, many of the products are made for single life. 6 BBC Studios
