Functions A function is a relationship that assigns exactly one output value for each input value. For each input, there is only one corresponding output.

Function Rule A function rule is an equation that describes a functional relationship. For example: C = p + 0.06p <- this is an equation to show relationship between sales tax and the price of an item.

Writing a Function Rule Number of loads 1 2 3 4 Cost $2.75 $5.50 $8.25 $11.00 Describe how the quantities relate. Both top and bottom numbers Your input is the number of loads. Your output is the total cost. For every additional load, we are adding $2.75 You write your function rule as an equation where your output is equal to some manipulation of your input. In this case, we would set “n” as the number of loads, and “c” as the total cost. Since the total cost is equal to 2.75 times the number of loads, we can write our function rule like this: c = 2.75n

Independent/Dependent Variables Independent variables are sets of values whose value does not depend on anything else. This is your input in a function. Dependent variables are sets of values whose value depends on the independent variable. This is your output in a function. For example… If you are cooking a turkey, and the amount of time it is in the over depends on how much the turkey weighs, then your independent variable is the weight of the turkey since it doesn’t depend on anything else. The time to cook depends on the weight, so time is the dependent variable.

Example #4 Name the independent and dependent variables. The amount of money Sammy earns in a week. She earns $7 per hour and does not work more than 16 hours per week. Niko can download songs for $0.75 per song. He has between $3 and $5 to spend.

Domain and Range The possible values for your input (the independent variable) is your domain. The possible values for your output (the dependent variable) is your range.
