Content Slide #1 Introduction Welcome to the training program for Edmodo! Ways to use technology in a classroom. What is Edmodo? To be said: Hello everyone and welcome to the Edmodo Training for the Arts! In this activity, you will be learning about the online domain Edmodo. As art teachers, we want to catch the students attention with not only are art lessons, but our writing lessons as well. Has anyone noticed a drop in our students grades when it comes to the written critique? (Pause and wait for response after each question) Has anyone ever thought of ways to bring those grades up? Has anyone used a form of technology in their classroom? What form did you use and why? Has anyone ever heard of Edmodo? What is Edmodo? Content Slide #2 So What is Edmodo? Social media platform often described as a Facebook for schools. An educational application designed by educators and used by many. Collaboration occurs with teacher, students, and parents in a closed environment. You can monitor student interaction. Teachers can post assignments, assessments, videos, files and lessons. Parents can create a parent account to connect with their child’s groups. It’s FREE To be said: Now that we have brainstormed ideas of raising the critique grades, sharing technology used in our classrooms, and talking about what Edmodo may be, let’s pinpoint the importance of Edmodo and what are it’s features. Students can view their grades at anytime. Content Slide #4 Why Edmodo for the Arts? Students can view their grades at anytime. Teachers can get instant feedback in the domain. Students can view assignments. Let’s say we do focus on “writing” for our district, but want to have a little more fun with the critique, grab the attention of our students, and use something familiar that relates to their life, like technology. We can focus our attention on a “selfie”. Every student knows what a “selfie” is! If we have our students write the critique and then do an additional “fun” assignment that allows them to be creative, it may bring the grades up for our critiques. For this particular assignment, students will be critiquing a famous piece of artwork. After, they would have to recreate that famous piece into a “selfie.” I know the ideal “selfie” is a picture of yourself, but this can include anyone! For instance, if we were to critique “The Last Supper,” students can take a photo of their family eating at dinner, having their family members pose, while mimicking “The Last Supper.” The great with this domain when posting an assignment is…(Read bullets). Content Slide #5 The “Selfie” The “selfie” assignment allows students to be creative. The written critique helps them to brainstorm ideas. Edmodo helps students to display their creativity. On Edmodo, other students and teacher can give constructive criticism . She mimicked the exact style of the art piece, but if she wanted to, this person could modernized it. For instance, maybe a bandana instead, hoops earrings, or a different background. When the student creates their “selfie,” they are to post it into the Edmodo domain their teacher has provided for them, respond to three of their peers “selfies,” and view their feedback at anytime. You can set up notifications through email or text. You can change/update personal information. Go to “Account” and click on “Settings.” While you are in the “Settings,” you can set up how you would like to get notifications. Notifications can be students posting on the domain, responding, etc. You can either receive notification through email or text. Whenever you feel the need to, you can always change your password or username by revisiting the “Settings.” Also, you can set privacy restrictions by only having your students visible to the selected classroom. Create a “Group” In “Group” on left sidebar, click “Create.” Enter/select group information—make it descriptive (name, subject, class period) When a group is generated, you will be given a code. We will create a mock assignment to get you familiar with the tool bars. Located on the left sidebar below your profile picture, click “Group” and go into “Create.” It will give you the option to enter your group information. Here you can give your name, the subject, class period, etc. Once you have created a group, you will be given a code. The code that you are given is the code you give to that particular classroom or group! So when they log into Edmodo they use that code to enter into the group for the classroom. Establish rules and expectations. I suggest you create a warming welcome page to relieve possible stress with your students. Be sure to write rules and expectations in this message as well. A great feature for Edmodo is when ALL of your students join the group, you can lock the group code so that no other students can join. You can do this by selecting the drop down arrow next to the group code and click “lock” option. It can easily be unlocked as well. If you wish to change the group code, you can select the drop down arrow next to the group code and click “reset”. A new 6 digit code will be created. First, locate the post box which is to the right of your profile picture. You can choose to post a note, an alert, an assignment, quiz or poll by clicking on the links. For notes and assignments, you can attach files and links from the computer or Edmodo library. NOTE! Any files or links you post will automatically go into your library, so be sure to provide a title or description when posting.
