Sixth and Seventh Petitions Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Testing vs. Temptation Fact: the English words testing and tempting come from the same Greek word peiradzo. The best place to see the distinction is in James chapter one where both are used in their different meanings.

Testing vs. Temptation James 1:2-4 What is the purpose of the testing of our faith? Develop perseverance which make us mature and complete Who is behind the testing? God

Testing vs. Temptation James 1:13-15 What is the idea behind temptation? Take us away from God Who is behind the tempting? Our own sinful desires

Two Sides of One Coin

Testing vs. Temptation Job 1 What does the devil want to happen when Job is tested/tempted? To curse the name of God. What is Job’s response? Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Testing vs. Temptation Genesis 22:1-19 What is the test that Abraham faced? To sacrifice the son of the promise. What does Hebrews 11:17-19 say is the result of the testing? Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead.

Testing vs. Temptation Genesis 22:1-19 What may have been the temptation? To love his son more than God

Testing vs. Temptation Matthew 4:1-11 What did Jesus face after his baptism? Temptation by Satan How did Jesus deal with each temptation? By standing firm on the Scriptures.

False belief and despair Two Great Temptations What are the two temptations the Small Catechism lists as examples of great shame and vice? False belief and despair

Two Great Temptations Deuteronomy 13:1-5 What is the test/temptation? A prophet, who can even do wondrous signs, tells people to follow other Gods. Don’t follow him. What warning do we receive in 2 Peter 2:1-3? There will be false teachers to avoid.

Two Great Temptations Luke 22:31-34 What does Jesus tell Peter? Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. How does Peter respond? Bravado, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.

Two Great Temptations Luke 22:31-34 What warning does 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 give? If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! Back to Peter. What happens later that night? Denies Jesus three times

Two Great Temptations Luke 22:31-34 What was Peter’s response? Wept bitterly How was this a test? It taught him humility

Two Great Temptations Luke 22:31-34 How was this a temptation? Deny Christ and then also deny forgiveness.

Our Hope? Ephesians 6:10-17

God’s Promises even in trouble. Acts 14:19 Stoned Romans 8:28-39 God’s great promise that nothing can separate us from his love in Christ.

God’s Promises even in trouble. Does this mean nothing bad will ever happen to a Christian? NO. But even in the midst of trouble we can be certain that we have not lost the love of God or the hope of eternal life

Christians have died some pretty horrible deaths. Blessed End Hebrews 11:32-38 Christians have died some pretty horrible deaths. Acts 7:57-60 Stephen prayed for his enemies even as he died at their hands.
