Do you think it is possible to travel on land at 1000 miles per hour? Do you think it is possible to make a car that is powered by a jet engine and a rocket? Yes, it is!

A supersonic vehicle goes faster than the speed of sound! BLOODHOUND SSC This is the BLOODHOUND SSC. It is a supersonic car (SSC). Weight: 7.5 tonnes Length: 13.4m It is a mixture of car and aeroplane technology! Did You Know? A supersonic vehicle goes faster than the speed of sound!

Why Bother? Discuss it! In 2007, Britain was facing a few problems... Not many children were choosing to study engineering or technology. Children needed inspiring with a new project. On October 28th 2008, the BLOODHOUND SSC team announced the start of a new world land speed record project. British engineering and design was at risk. Discuss it! With the person beside you, think of as many things as you can which have been designed using engineering and technology.

Inspiration Think about it! It was decided that a project like designing and making the fastest car in the world, would get children interested! The BLOODHOUND Project aims to inspire learning. The Project Team There are hundreds of people involved in the project. Here are three of the main people involved… I am the project leader and my name is Richard Noble. I have worked on many high risk projects before including Thrust 2, where Britain won the title of the World Land Speed Record in 1983. My name is Andy Green and I am a fighter pilot in the RAF. I was the driver of Thrust SSC and I set the current record of 763mph in 1997. I will be the driver of BLOODHOUND SSC. I am the chief aerodynamicist and my name is Ron Ayers. I have worked as an engineer since 1950. I even worked on the first model of the Victor Bomber. The main project I worked on was on the BLOODHOUND missile. That is why this supersonic car is called BLOODHOUND.

The Design The front section is carbon fibre which is the same as the front of racing cars. The back section is like an aircraft.

The Wheels The back wheels will be on the outside of the car. The front wheels sit in the main body of the car. Watch this clip to find out why the BLOODHOUND SSC doesn’t have any tyres. The Car Has Three Engines The car will be powered by a jet engine and a rocket. Together they will produce eight times the power of all the Formula One cars on a starting grid put together! The sound of the engine will be 140 decibels, which is louder than a 747 aeroplane at take off! The engine is made of: a jet engine, a rocket cluster, a Jaguar Supercharged V8 engine. Listen here! The Braking System The supersonic car will be fitted with: airbrakes Braking a vehicle travelling at 1000mph needs careful design and special technology. The supersonic car will be fitted with: First the throttle will be closed. This will stop the fuel flowing. airbrakes Next the airbrakes will be used to carry on slowing down the car. parachutes wheel brakes Then the first parachute will be released. Fascinating Fact The next parachute will be released if it is needed. For the test run in Newquay on 26th October, the car will be fitted with carbon wheel brakes. These will not work in the real record-breaking attempt as they would explode in the desert. Once the car is travelling at 200mph, the wheel brakes will be used. Watch here!

The Control Systems The vehicle control systems provide information and control over three main areas: the jet engine function the rocket engine the other vehicle functions like the steering and brakes. Choosing a Land Speed Record Location So how do you choose where to attempt the land speed world record? Discuss it! What do you think the area needs to be like for a land speed record? The location must be… A huge, flat piece of land that the car can travel on for at least 12 miles. Smooth and firm ground but not too hard. Fascinating Fact The car will travel 1 mile in 3.6 seconds!

Hakskeen Pan The location was finally found. Hakskeen Pan – a dried lake bed in the Northern Cape of South Africa. A space in the desert was cleared especially for the record attempt. 317 local people cleared 16,000 tonnes of stone from the area, so that the surface is safe for the supersonic car. Did You Know? A ‘pan’ is a dry lake and ‘Hakskeen’ means heel in Afrikaans. Watch this video! The Importance of Failing There have been many experiments and fails along the way. These are really important for helping the team know how to make improvements. F irst Think About It Think about a time you have failed at something. Did you give up or did you keep trying? What would have happened if Richard Noble gave up after the Bloodhound’s FAIL? A ttempt I n L earning This photo shows what happened during Richard Noble’s first attempt at beating the world land speed record in 1977. The car went sideways and rolled. No one was hurt, but Richard realised he would need some expert help!

Newquay, UK 2017 On 26th October 2017, Cornwall Airport, Newquay, the BLOODHOUND SSC made its first ever public run. The public were able to see this amazing creation and watch Andy Green drive the supersonic car up to speeds of 200mph along the runway.
