Presentation transcript:

Aim: How did the teachings of Confucius maintain an orderly society in classical China? Do Now: Because we all have many different relationships, we have many different roles in society. Explain what is expected of you in each of the following roles: A son or daughter An older/younger brother or sister A friend A student

Confucius lived between 551BC - 479BC Confucius lived between 551BC - 479BC. His ideas were written down in The Analects.

What was happening in China that influenced the birth of philosophy in China? Toward the end of the Zhou Dynasty political turmoil (fighting between feudal rulers) led philosophers to wonder how order could be restored in society.

What were Confucius’ main ideas? Confucius believed that if everybody followed their role in society, order could be restored. According to Confucius, there were five social relationships: 1. Ruler to Subject 2. Father to Son 3. Husband to wife 4. Older brother to younger brother 5. Friend to Friend Superior Inferior

How should those in the superior role act? Those who are superior, Confucius said, should rule by example!

Confucian Quote #1 “When your parents are alive, you should not go too far afield (away) in your travels. If you do, your whereabouts should always be known.” 4:19

Confucian Quote #2 “In one’s household, it is the women that are difficult to deal with. If you let them get too close, they become (disrespectful). If you keep them at a distance, they complain.” 17:25

Confucian Quote #3 “Make it your guiding principle to do your best for others and to be trustworthy in what you say. Do not accept as friend anyone who is not as good as you. When you make a mistake do not be afraid of mending your ways.” 9:25

Confucian Quote #4 Ju Yu asked the Master (Confucius), “Should one immediately put into practice what one has heard?” “As your elder brothers are still alive, you are hardly in a position immediately to put into practice what you have heard.”

Confucian Quote #5 “Encourage the people to work hard by setting an example yourself. Do not allow your efforts to slacken.” 13:1

The primary duty of all Chinese children was to practice filial piety, or showing complete obedience and devotion to your parents. How can you show filial piety to your parents? List 3 examples!

Showing Filial Piety in China Men are expected to carry on the family name by having a son! Children are expected to take care of their parents when they are elderly When parents die, the eldest son is expected to lead a ritual burial and perform a sacrifice at their gravesite!

Close: Explain 2 ways in which the teachings of Confucius could help maintain order in society!
