Outreach & Instruction

Curriculum Mapping What is curriculum mapping? How is it typically used in libraries? How can be applied to outreach?

Sample first year outreach/instruction map

Elements to Consider Audience Level of messaging Assessment options Freshman, first-generation, international, etc. Level of messaging Introducing, reinforcing, advanced, etc. Assessment options How will you measure outcomes? Time/duration How long does the interaction last? What time of year does the interaction occur?

Elements to consider Depth Breadth

Active learning

Step One: Know Thyself... It’s important to identify who you are and what type of map you are trying to create.

Step One: Your Turn Each table is a type of university with distinct characteristics Have one person read the description of your university (colored paper) Discuss the characteristics of your undergraduate population.

Step 2: Goals & Outcomes 2 Types Instruction Goals SLOs: Student Learning Outcomes Outreach Goals OLOs: Outreach Learning Outcomes Broad and Programmatic Narrow and Task Oriented Goal Outcome

Step 2: your turn Look for the Gray sheet with Goals and Outcomes Circle 2-3 SLOs and 2-3 OLOs that are appropriate in context of the description of your university. You have an Outreach/Instruction Map template. Write your selected SLOs and OLOs on your map along the left hand side.

Step 3: Adding Events Identify fixed events Often little control over these They are a part of campus or library life Identify the who, what, where, when, why, and how

Step 3: adding events To Your Map

Step 3: your turn You have some “fixed events” cards on your table (blue paper) Use these cards and your goals and outcomes to fill out the blue tabs on your template First one is already complete: New Student Conferences You do: Library Information Literacy Class for English Composition Course Finals Events

Step 4: Assess Discuss your map with your table Who’s covered? What’s covered? What SLOs and OLOs are covered? What’s not? Level of interaction and learning? Timing?

Step 4: choose additional events Select 2-3 purple events that meet your SLOs and OLOs Add them to your template map

Closing the Loop: Questions Question #1: Where did you notice areas of overlap on your map? Question #2: Were there glaring gaps in your map or underserved populations?

Thanks & Gig’Em
