Little Stories, Little Words, Many Meanings A Reading Resource to Teach Multiple Meanings Created by: Roxanne Helene Clanin CAL-ED Conference March 7, 2015 Presented by: Carol Hajdu, Jennifer Burnett, and Sam Mullins

https://sites.google.com/site/roxanneclaninmemorial/csun Roxanne Helene Clanin https://sites.google.com/site/roxanneclaninmemorial/csun The Little Stories, Little Words, Many Meanings website will be continued and maintained by Roxanne’s DHH teaching colleague Carol Hajdu, with assistance from Jennifer Burnett and Sam Mullins

How and why this project began: Roxanne Clanin was an LAUSD D/HH teacher for over 25 years. She taught D/HH students at Multnomah Elementary School and D/HH students with special needs at Marlton School for the Deaf Inspired by: EQTDHH* workshops, 2011-2013, which focused on developing D/HH teacher skills in implementing the Common Core State Standards in English-Language Arts (CCSS-ELA) Fairview Training, November 2013

The Illustrator Marie Pedrigal Roxanne wrote 43 stories that targeted words with multiple meanings Each of these stories were illustrated by a 21 year old deaf student, Marie Pedrigal, from Miller Career and Transition Center

The Illustrator Marie Pedrigal

The illustrations

What are Dolch sight words? “Pesky Sight Words” as Roxanne would say Sight words: commonly used words Young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight Automatically recognized in print without decoding 50% of all reading texts are made up of the same 100 words! Therefore called Sight Words!

DHH Students and Sight Words Multiple meaning sight words are a challenge for emergent readers Sight words may not be depicted in ASL or in pictures Miscues prevent the reader from fully understanding the text

Multiple Meaning Words

Common Core State Standards CCSS address knowledge of sight words, reading comprehension skills, and understanding of multiple meanings of words

Common core connection Language Anchor Standard Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: 4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate

Fairview Learning LLC Students learn multiple meanings and multiple signs of sight words To truly comprehend print, D/HH students must sign the Dolch words using ASL concepts Adapted Dolch Sight Words included in the 5 Program Components Fairview Learning: a reading program adapted specifically for DHH students who use ASL http://www.fairviewlearning.com/

“Fairview’s unique program provides individuals the literacy tools to construct mental, linguistic frameworks. These frameworks, specific to each user, allow access and increasing fluency in English and ASL, and ease the movement between the two languages.”

Little Stories were created Adapted Dolch Words Fairview focuses on teaching D/HH students basic sight words which will help them gain understanding when interacting with text using Adapted Dolch Sight words: Pre-Primer Primer 1st Grade 2nd Grade 3rd grade Little Stories were created using this word list http://www.fairviewlearning.com/

Roxanne’s Vision Roxanne wanted to tackle those “pesky sight words” 43 Little Stories with multiple meaning sight words Worksheets accompanying each story Sentences in isolation identifying the multiple meaning ASL Videos accompanying each of the stories

Little Stories 43 stories to support D/HH students’ internalization of multiple meaning sight words in context Standards-based tool to integrate into curriculum Adaptable to fit different needs of different D/HH classrooms 5 Dolch Words per story including multiple meanings for each targeted sight word Stories are in levels instead of grades based on Dolch words Note* stories are based on Dolch word level, NOT on the actual reading level of the passage use the correlation between dhh and hearing students because if a hearing student read the sight word correctly but we do not know if they understand the context itself. With this- we can see the thought process of DHH student with those specific sight words and see if they can figure out the right context

Worksheets Literal and inferential questions Utilizes ASL (expressive and receptive) and English (reading and writing) Citing text-based evidence Multi-media resources to access information Flexible tool to adapt with any teaching style, curriculum or current unit

Worksheets: Back to ccss CCSS emphasizes that all students need to be 21st Century ready by utilizing technology and developing skills in the 4 C’s- Communication Collaboration Critical Thinking Creativity “Students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking and listening and language use. They tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently and they integrate what they learn through technology with what they learn offline.” (www.cde.ca.gov)
