Topic: Sedimentary Rocks PSSA: 3.5.7.A/S8.D.1.1

Objective: TLW compare sedimentary rocks based on origin, composition, and texture. TLW identify different formations made from sedimentary rock.

MI #1: Sedimentary Rock (Origins) Rock is weathered over time forming fragments called sediments. Those fragments are eroded and deposited in layers (called strata); these layers are then compacted and cemented together to form sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks typically form at the Earth’s surface.

MI #2: Sedimentary Rock (Composition and Texture) Clastic – made from rock fragments cemented together by another mineral. Chemical – form from solutions of dissolved minerals. Organic – form from the remains of living things.

MI #3: Sedimentary Rock (Formations and Structures) Stratification is the process by which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers. Sedimentary rock can record the motion of wind and water in ripple marks. Fossils are usually found in sedimentary rocks.

So What…? Real Life Application Sedimentary rock are valuable to geologists because they often can be used to interpret the geologic history of the Earth.
