MUSCLES Chapter 1.4
What are Muscles? Muscles are the main organs of the system Composed of Muscle Fibers Long and thin cells Myofibrils allow for muscles to contract
MUSCLES There are over 600 muscles in the body. All muscles contract There are 3 kinds of muscles
Three Kinds of Muscle
SKELETAL MUSCLES Connects to bones… causes them to move Voluntary muscles You make them move These muscles react quickly and tire quickly They work in pairs
Tendon vs. Ligament
Movement When your muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on the tendon, which pulls on your bone and they move together
The biceps are the flexor The triceps are the extensor
SMOOTH MUSCLE Does not have bands They contract without you thinking about it involuntary muscle Controls breathing, blood pressure, and digestion Reacts slowly and tires slowly
CARDIAC MUSCLE 1. Only found in the heart 2. Involuntary 3. Do not tire out 4. Produce their own signal
Keeping your Muscular System Healthy Use it or lose it! Resistance Exercising strengthens Skeletal Muscle Use of Weights and bands Aerobic Exercise Strengthens the Heart Any activity that causes your heart rate to increase Always warm-up and stretch
