Giving instant Feedback to Disabled Students with Technology to Create Engagement and Motivation By John O’Sullivan

Welcome I would like to welcome you on behalf of The Center on Technology and Disability

John F. O’Sullivan I am an educational technology and assistive technology author I work a as a Assistive Technology Specialist and Librarian I have a background in both technology and special education

What is instant Feedback? This is about letting students know how he or she is doing in Realtime. This can be done with educational technology.

Why does Technology Work? Students generally like instant feedback. If you correct mistakes right away this will create more opportunities for positive reinforcing. The more positive reinforcement a student gets, the more likely they are to be happy, successful and productive. The goal is to take away the negative aspect of failure and add the positive effects of success. The negative feedback is impersonal, or you might say privately.

“When people say work harder I say love what you do” –John O’Sullivan

Let’s compare immediate feedback to the traditional teaching model You test students once every two weeks. Then your students get their tests back several days later. We check to see if they did their homework Students raise hands only if they think they know the answer. Students self-check their answers. If a student did not do well on a subject, we move on to something else.

Poll Question? Do you use educational technology several times a week or more?

The Red Ink Effect!

Compare that to this Both are stressful. The hand written red ink is more stressful.

Red Ink There has actually been research and articles warning of the negative effects of red ink.

How does this relate to students with a disability? We don’t spend enough time talking about the emotional struggles of students with disabilities unless they are struggling academically or failing. We are told to motivate students but never told how to do that. To motive students, you have to create work that is geared towards the student’s interests. People learn much faster through success than they do by failure. Instant feedback can correct

Assistive Technology With assistive technology we often think about a task that a student has to do and a tool to help them functionally complete the task. We should also think about how to motivate students and reinforce positive outcomes.

How does negative feedback or no feedback feel? Imagine if you had to go to work and everyone could do a better job than you? How would you feel? Think of the days when you are successful at work. How do you feel?

Poll Question Do you find that engaging and motivating students is a need in your classroom?

What are the benefits of instant feedback? If you are making a mistake, then you correct it right away Teachers get real-time data about how students are doing Students can change their behavior to improve performance Teachers can change their teaching, in real time to improve teaching Immediate consequences are much more effective in regards to changing behavior than delayed consequences. If the feedback is negative, the student can use this to avoid consequences in the future. Instant feedback can cause immediate emotional responses in students If students are not self-aware of how much they know, then it can be corrected.

The technology works because how it makes students feel. Really Why does it Work? People love attention Instant positive feedback is what students are used to when they are home using a computer or playing video games. The technology works because how it makes students feel.

How does instant Feedback affects People? This is how your students get feedback when they are away from school.

Instant Gratification or Feedback is so Powerful that People Continue an Activity Even When it is Dangerous

Poll Question Do you find that attention spans of your students are shorter in the computer age?

Gamifying Gamifying sounds like turning your lesson into a video game. What I suggest is give students instant feedback, and you get many of the benefits without trying to turn your curriculum into a game.

What does the Research Say? There is a ton of research that says instant feedback and consequences are way more effective than delayed consequences. If you have never read any research, you could figure this out by using student response system and seeing students reactions.

How Can We Give Instant Feedback? The fastest way is with technology. Correcting papers and returning them is not instant feedback.

Why are there not more People using Technology to give Feedback? Many people have had bad experiences with technology Many people think it is not worth the time

Instant Feedback Video https://youtu.be/KUkI5IA7drc

The Good News about using this Technology Most of the technology is free or very inexpensive The technology is very user-friendly

Bottom Line You are going to get out more than what you put in with technology.

What Technology Should We Use to Give Instant feedback? Kahoot! Socrative Plickers Quizlet Quizizz

People Still Need Human interaction I do not want people to think that using technology means not having teacher interaction. You can increase feedback with technology. People still need human interaction to answer questions and gain information. It is best to use the computer as a tool not a replacement for a teacher.

What are the Benefits of Student Response Systems? You give and get instant feedback You collect data about your students in real time It is a great assessment tool There are many student response systems that are free and user- friendly

Poll Question? Have you ever used a student response system?

Self Awareness Sometimes people lack self-awareness. Instant feedback makes people more aware and fills in the missing details

Kahoot! Gives instant feedback Gamified Very User-friendly

Kahoot! Video https://youtu.be/GjlWtjOqaU0

Socrative You can give instant feedback with Sorative. You can give tests or quizzes with Socrative, and it grades them for you. If you use Kahoot! The transition to Socrative is easy.

Socrative Video https://youtu.be/IJeB-EVjq1k

Plickers You get instant feedback in real time Using Plickers is a lot of fun Very User-friendly

Plickers Video https://youtu.be/u25DFFZfGng

Quizizz You create quizzes online with Quizizz.

Quizizz Video https://youtu.be/0JSD-E3lORw

Most or all of the Student Response Systems are very Similar The same concepts hold true for all of them with instant feedback.

Quizlet Students can study independently Quizlet has a database of 15 Million flashcards You can share out flashcards with students or they can share them out to each other. It is gamified. You can have students create their own flashcards.

Technology that Gives Feedback but not instant Feedback Giving Real-time feedback is ideal. Giving feedback that is not instantaneous also has benefits. It gives you strong data on your students. Two Examples: Google Forms Zipgrade

Google Forms You can give quizzes, homework assignments, classroom assignments with this Google Forms.

Google Forms Video https://youtu.be/NunPLO3R0dg

ZipGrade You can give a practices quiz and give it back to them right after they take it. It cuts your grading time down by a lot.

Virtual Reality Virtual Reality is a growing area of education. One of the reasons is instant feedback.

Imagine What Technology we will see in the Future. Think about how that will motivate students in the future.

Thank You! I would like to thank you on behalf of The Center on Technology and Disability for attending this webinar.
