Surveying the text What is on the cover? What do you think the cover means? Is there a summary? Is there a short bio of the author? How is the book divided? Are there chapter titles? Sections? How do we preview the text of what we will be studying?

Reading the first page Read the first page. What details do you notice that seem odd? What predictions can you make about the world of the novel from these details? How do we preview the text of what we will be studying?

Flip through the book Flipping through the pages can reveal some important elements about the contents. What stands out?
