What is Typography? Typography= the design of the characters and the way they are presented on the page.

Typeface? -the basic design of a character; each typeface has a design for each letter of the alphabet Serif The characters have attributes on the tips called serifs Sans serif Sans is French for without, so the characters do not have attributes (serifs) on the tips Ornamental/Decorative Designed strictly to catch the eye and used sparingly Script The characters appear to have been written by hand

Types of Fonts Mono spaced= this is a mono spaced font Proportional spaced= this is a proportional spaced font

Leading, Kerning, Tracking Leading- vertical spacing between of lines of text; also called line spacing you can expand the line spacing using leading. Kerning-horizontal spacing between pairs of letters; used to add or subtract space between pairs of letters to create a more visually appealing and readable text BOOK may have the O’s to close to each other Tracking-horizontal spacing between all the characters in a large block of text; Can use to make the text in one column align with text in another column

Design Alignment- relationship of elements in a pattern or grid. Balance- determined by how elements are placed on a page. Contrast- the use of big and small elements, black and white text, squares, and circles. Proximity- placing elements near each other to demonstrate their relationship Repetition- repeating some aspect of the design throughout the entire layout. White Space- negative or empty space between text and/or graphics.

Balance? Types of balance Symmetrical- elements of the design are centered or evenly divided horizontally and vertically on a page. Asymmetrical- off center alignment created with an odd or mismatched number. Radial- elements radiate or swirl out from a center point.

Complimentary Colors

Colors!!! On Monitors colors are created by mixing varying degrees of red, green and blue light On Printers there's a four color printing process where color is created by layering cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink

Color Terms Hue- a color Tint- a hue plus white Shade- a hue plus black Saturation- the amount of the hue used. Value- lightness or darkness of the hue

Types of Guides Margin Guides- lines that indicate the space between the edge of the page and the documents contents Column Guides- lines that control the flow of text within columns and keep text out of the gutter Ruler Guides- used to align objects
