Why is safety important ? Prevent accidents – immediate big ones that you can see – fatalities, loss of limb, fingers, toes etc. Also important to remember some are chronic illnesses, may not see effect during your tenure here, but see it later in life e.g. biological toxins, cumulative poisons etc. Stress importance “TO YOU”. I can be sitting in my office in north campus, it won’t do anybody much good.

Why is safety important ? “It is better to be a thousand times careful than once dead” -Old Chinese Proverb- Prevent accidents – immediate big ones that you can see – fatalities, loss of limb, fingers, toes etc. Also important to remember some are chronic illnesses, may not see effect during your tenure here, but see it later in life e.g. biological toxins, cumulative poisons etc. Stress importance “TO YOU”. Overview Safety responsibilities Campus safety units Campus safety issues that you can help with Prevent accidents – immediate big ones that you can see – fatalities, loss of limb, fingers, toes etc. Also important to remember some are chronic illnesses, may not see effect during your tenure here, but see it later in life e.g. biological toxins, cumulative poisons etc. Stress importance “TO YOU”. Research Safety Issues in Unit Lack of safety awareness Lack of safety training Lack of appropriate research registration ACCIDENTS HAPPEN Minimize potential and extent of injuries; damage to lab or environment; negative impact on research by having PLAN Note – emergency conjures up accident, spill, fire etc. But also plan for power outage etc. Step 1 – Have Plan BUT also need to be FAMILIAR with plan Ask who works in lab? Do you know where your eyewash station is? Emergency shower? Fire extinguisher? Etc. Are you sure that your shower, eyewash is functioning? Can you get to it? Or is there clutter around it Ask how many work in the building? Do they know the exit routes? Where are the stairwells?

Lack of Awareness Unaware of safety policies, programs, services What can Business Managers do? Be informed themselves Direct personnel to DRS Help distribute DRS information? Call us to present at unit seminars or meetings? Inform DRS of new PIs Inform DRS of PIs leaving ACCIDENTS HAPPEN Minimize potential and extent of injuries; damage to lab or environment; negative impact on research by having PLAN Note – emergency conjures up accident, spill, fire etc. But also plan for power outage etc. Step 1 – Have Plan BUT also need to be FAMILIAR with plan Ask who works in lab? Or is there clutter around it Ask how many work in the building? Do they know the exit routes? Where are the stairwells?

Lack of Safety Training Campus Policy - all new lab researchers must complete DRS on-line general lab safety training Other safety modules also present What can Bus. Mgrs. do? Inform unit personnel of training requirements Direct them to DRS web-site (http://www.drs.uiuc.edu/training/index.aspx) ACCIDENTS HAPPEN Minimize potential and extent of injuries; damage to lab or environment; negative impact on research by having PLAN Note – emergency conjures up accident, spill, fire etc. But also plan for power outage etc. Step 1 – Have Plan BUT also need to be FAMILIAR with plan Ask who works in lab? Research Registration Required for regulatory compliance Bio projects with IBC X-rays units with DRS Class 3b and 4 lasers with DRS What can Bus. Mgrs. do?
