Equivalent Expression Tell you front back partner what this means

Vocabulary When addition or subtraction signs separate an algebraic expression into parts, each part is called a TERM. The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable is called the coefficient. LIKE TERMS are terms that contain the same variables. 3x + 7 + x Three terms Which number is the coefficient? Like terms

How to simplify an algebraic expression? Use properties to write an equivalent expression that has no like terms and no parenthesis. Example : x + x = 2x 4 ( 6x) = 4 * 6 * x = (4 x 6) x X = 24x Does order matter when we are adding or multiplying? What property are we using when we change order?

Simplify each expression (3 x p) x 11 d + d + d 7w + 8 + x

The expression 3(x + 1) + x represents the total cost Three friends will pay $x each for admission to the museum plus $1 each to view the mummy exhibit. A fourth friend will pay admission but will not view the mummy exhibit. Write and simplify an expression that represents the total cost. The expression 3(x + 1) + x represents the total cost The total cost is $4x + $3

Three friends will pay $x each for admission to the museum plus $1 each to view the mummy exhibit. A fourth friend will pay admission but will not view the mummy exhibit. Write and simplify an expression that represents the total cost. Write and simplify an expression for the total cost of six friends to go to the museum if only four friends view the mummy exhibit.

3 + 3 + 4 = 2(3) + 4 x + x + y = 2x + y Properties can be used to simplify or to factor expressions with two variables.

Simplify this expression (14y + x) + 22y = (x + 14y) + 22y = x + (14y + 22y) = x + 36y

Simplify using the distributive property 4(2x + y) = 4(2x) + 4(y) = 8x + 4y

Factor 27x + 18y 27x + 18y = 9(3x + 2y) What is the GCF? Divide both terms by the GCF 27x + 18y = 9(3x + 2y)

Brain Break! Name Move

Try to solve these with Hot Dog Partners Simplify 3x + 9y + 2x Simplify 7(3x + y) Factor 12x + 8y

Word problem – fun fun! The farmers market sells fruit baskets. Each basket has 3 apples and 1 pear. Use a to represent the cost of each apple and p to represent the cost of each pear. Write and simplify an expression that represents the total cost of 5 baskets.

Solve with your hamburger partner – simplify each expression 2x + 5y + 7x 4(2x + 5y)

Try this on your own! Factor 35x + 28y

Solve with your side to side partner Tessa bought five skirts at $p each. Three of the 5 skirts came with a matching top for an additional $9 each. Write and simplify an expression that represents the total cost of her purchase.

Solve on your own The gift bag from Claire’s includes 5 bottles of nail polish and 2 tubes of lip gloss. (Sorry boys, I know this doesn’t interest you ). Use p to represent the cost of each bottle of nail polish and g to represent the cost of each tube of lip gloss. Write and simplify an expression that represents the total cost of 8 gift bags.

Word Problems Target sells a candy basket that contains bags of skittles and bags of M&M’s. The basket has 3 bags of M&M’s and 4 bags of Skittles. The price of M&M’s is represented as m and the price of skittles is represented as s. If Adam wants to buy 5 gift baskets (one for each of his favorite teachers), how much money would he spend?

Read this carefully! Katie is k years old. Will is 5 years older than Katie. Graham is 3 times as old as Will. Josh is k years older than Graham. Write an expression and simplify it to determine how old Graham is.

Simplify each expression 4x + 9x +x = 3 + 3x + 2x = 9y + 2x + y =

Rate your level of confidence in today’s materials Super confident, feeling great – stand in the back of the classroom So – so – could use more help – stand by the door I am so lost I couldn’t even tell you what subject we are in right now. Where am I? – stay in your seat

Are you Ready for the CIRCUS!? 5 friends went to a circus. Each ticket to get in costs $x. 2 of the friends paid an extra $2 to see the tight rope walker. How much will it cost for all the friends to go to the circus. Write an expression and then simplify it.
