Best Mindset for Middle School Success I belong in this community. My ability and competency grow with my effort. I can succeed at this. This work has value for me.

From “The Forgotten Middle” The level of academic achievement that students attain by 8th grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate high school than anything that happens academically in high school.

Technology: Supporting Student Achievement Laptop computers Chromebooks Computer Lab Projectors Smart Boards Wireless Environment Document Cameras And thank you parents and PTO!!!

What is the role of a counselor? Student advocate Support person Life skills teacher Conflict mediator Academic advisor Career Fair Program coordinator Orientation Registration Team Building ICAP Careers Social/Emotional Activities

What else is different from elementary school? Fresh baked cookies every day! The number of students in each grade! We don’t line up very often! Lockers! Lunch! 8:25-3:21! 7 classes, different rooms and teachers! Your child!!!!!

Speaking of Your Child… 6th grade team of five teachers with Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies (“school within a school”). Most of those classes in the same pod. Most if not all of those lockers in the same pod. 6th grade only lunch. Separate 6th grade entry in the morning. First day of school will be 6th grade only. Other safe and orderly school practices.

Required 7th Grade Core Courses Science Social Studies Language Arts Mathematics Math 6 Math 6/7 Math 7/8?

7th Grade Elective Courses Semester (18 weeks): Art * PE * (Required Elective) Technical Education* Family & Consumer Science* World Languages & Cultures? Theater Arts 6 Choir 6 (By choice only) All courses dependent on enrollment and other factors. Full Year (36 weeks): Concert Band 6 Orchestra 6

Intervention Courses We often “double dose” students in Math by enrolling them in grade level Math plus a period of intervention Math called “Math Seminar.” This Intervention class takes the place of one of the three elective classes. We similarly use a “Learning Strategies” class to provide additional support for some students. Both of these are designed to help students “keep up and catch up.”

After School Activities Program Sponsored by the City of Westminster Taught by WC teachers and Westminster P&R staff On-site and off-site activities Offered Monday-Thursday Fall and Spring offerings Activity Examples: Volleyball Basketball Track Bowling Golf Cross Country Running Running/Bolder Boulder Training Fee based programs with scholarship available
