Divestment Update Background: Bill 44-16, Retirement – Fossil Fuel Investments – Restrictions were formally introduced in October 2016 to require the County’s retirement plans to divest of certain fossil fuel holdings. In April 2017, the bill was changed to a resolution, which encouraged divestment, but did not mandate it by law. On May 16, 2017, the County Council approved the resolution which requires the Board(s) to minimize investments in companies with the largest fossil fuel holdings to the extent possible within their fiduciary duties. The Board(s) are also required to report biannually to the Council on the implementation of these actions. The Board(s) will continue to adhere and abide by its formal ESG policies guidelines as part of their investment decision making and monitoring process.
