Competencies (Page 1 of 2) Describe graphics software, including desktop publishing, image editors, illustration programs, image galleries, and graphics suites Discuss audio and video editing software Describe multimedia, including story boards and multimedia authoring programs Page 96

Competencies (Page 2 of 2) Explain Web authoring, Web site design, and Web authoring programs Describe virtual reality and VRML Discuss knowledge-based (expert) systems Describe robotics including perception systems, industrial robots, and mobile robots Page 96

Introduction Software that for years was only available for mainframe computers is now available for microcomputers. Specialized application software makes it possible to perform advanced tasks at home. Home users can now create Webs sites, work with graphic images, and create music or art. Robots now provide security and assistance in homes. Competent end users need to be aware of specialized applications such as: graphics programs, audio and video editing software, multimedia, Web authoring, and artificial intelligence. Page 97

Specialized Applications Graphics Programs Audio and Video Software Multimedia Programs Web Authoring Programs Artificial Intelligence Virtual Reality Knowledge-based Systems Robotics Page 98

Illustration programs Graphics Desktop publishing Image editors Illustration programs Image galleries Graphic suites Desktop publishing programs (Key Term) are also referred to as page layout programs (Key Term) Desktop publishers mix text and graphics Image editors modify bitmap image (Key Term) files Illustrators modify vector (Key Term) files Image galleries are libraries of electronic images Graphic suites bundle separate graphic design programs Page 98

Audio and Video Video editing software Audio editing software Enhances digital video footage Apple's iMovie & Windows Movie Maker Audio editing software Creates and edits audio clips Can create your own MP3s Apple’s Garage Band and Sony’s ACID Digital video editing software makes it easy to make digital video into professional quality home movies You can create and edit your own movies Video Reorganize and add effects to footage Assemble and edit home movies Audio Create and edit audio clips Add audio effects Filter out pops or scratches Page 101

Digital Video Editing Capture Video Edit a Movie Create a DVD Page 102

Multimedia The integration of a variety of media into one presentation Video Music Voice Graphics Text Should include user interactivity Multimedia presentations can include a variety of media and should include interactivity Interactivity allows the user to choose the information to view, to control the pace and flow of information, and to respond to items and give feedback Pages are linked by buttons (Key Term) Multimedia is used in video games, Web presentations, and even word processing documents Ask students to give examples of how multimedia is used in business and education Page 104

Links & Buttons Links can be to… Video Sound Graphics Text Files Buttons are links and provide the ability to navigate through a presentation Links are connections to related information Can be video, sound, graphics, or text files Buttons are special areas that provide navigation Page 105

Developing Multimedia Presentations Plan and Analyze Design Create Support Plan and analyze – determine the objective of the project Design – create a storyboard for the project Storyboard is a design tool used to record the intended overall logic, flow, and structure of a multimedia presentation Create – use an authoring tool to create interactive multimedia presentations Support – evaluate effectiveness, identify errors, and revise the project as needed Page 105

Multimedia Authoring Programs Special programs used to create multimedia presentations Bring together all the video, audio, graphics, and text elements Popular programs Macromedia Director Authorware Toolbook Used to bring elements into an interactive framework Ask students if they know what interactivity is Help students describe the steps to create an interactive multimedia presentation Page 106

Web Authoring Corporations use the Web to reach new customers Many individuals create their own personal sites, called Web logs or blogs, to keep in touch with friends and family Web Site Design Web Authoring Programs Creating a Web site is called Web authoring It is easy to create Web pages with the many Web authoring programs that are available Morphing (Key Term) – a special effect, one image seems to melt into another A popular type of Web site is a Web log (blog) Web logs are Web pages with dated postings like a bulletin board Ask students about using Web logs Page 107

Web Site Design Interactive multimedia form of communication Create a graphical map of overall content Add multimedia elements like animation Macromedia's Flash Morphing Return Page 108

Web Authoring Programs Known as Web page editors or HTML editors Provide support for Web site design Creates HTML coding Popular programs Macromedia Dreamweaver NetObjects Fusion Microsoft FrontPage These programs provide support for Web site design and HTML coding Without knowing HTML, you can create a Web page using one of these programs Page 108

Web Authoring Sequence Page 109

Artificial Intelligence Attempts to simulate human senses, thought processes, and actions Designed to help people and organizations become more productive Three areas of AI Virtual reality Knowledge-based (expert) systems Robotics Artificial intelligence is a field of computer science Mimics or simulates human senses, thought processes, and actions Includes reasoning, learning from past actions, and using senses such as vision and touch In the past, computers have been used to solve structured problems (Key Term) once performed by clerks. Now organizations are looking to automate unstructured problems (Key Term) performed by managers Page 110

Virtual Reality Artificial or simulated reality Generated in 3-D by a computer Commonly known as VR, artificial reality, or virtual environments Virtual reality modeling language (VRML) Used to create real-time animated 3-D scenes Cosmos Worlds from Cosmos Software Known as VR, virtual reality simulates reality in 3-D VRML is used to create real-time animated 3-D scenes Many sites exist on the Web with virtual reality applications Modern virtual reality strives to be an immersive experience (Key Term) Virtual reality walls (Key Term) allow a user to view simulations Return Page 110

Knowledge-Based (Expert) Systems Artificial intelligence that uses a database for assistance Database is known as a knowledge base Many use "fuzzy logic" These systems use a database, or knowledge-based system that contains facts, rules to relate these facts, and user input to formulate recommendations and decisions Knowledge-based systems are also referred to as expert systems (Key Term) Fuzzy logic allows the computer to respond to questions in a very humanlike way These systems are used in areas such as: Medicine Geology Architecture Nature Return Page 111

Robotics The field of study concerned with using robots Robots are computer-controlled machines Mimic the motor activities of living things Three types of robots Perception system robots Industrial robots Mobile robots Robots are used in factories, manufacturing, home security, the military, and many other fields of human endeavor Can be programmed to do more that one task Often used to handle dangerous, repetitive tasks Types of robots Perception System Robots – imitate some of the human senses Industrial Robots – perform tasks in factories, etc. Mobile Robots – can move about and perform tasks Page 111

Careers in IT Desktop publishers use computers to format and create publication-ready material Books Magazines Newsletters Newspapers Generally requires completion of a program, good communication skills, and artistic ability Desktop publishers can expect to earn $25K - $42K annually Page 113

A Look to the Future Artificial Intelligence Research is being done to give robots a sense of values so they can make decisions independently The Saya robot is under development in Tokyo The Saya robot is hoped to be used as a communication device similar to a Web cam Research is being done on giving robots a sense of values Page 114

Discussion Questions (Page 1 of 2) Describe graphics, including desktop publishers, image editors, illustration programs, image galleries, and graphics suites. Discuss audio and video editing software. What is multimedia? How are multimedia presentations developed? Have students turn to the end of Chapter 4 in their textbooks to view the same “Open-Ended” questions/statements Page 121
