Woodward Academy Primary School Kim Mulkey Let’s Make a Movie Woodward Academy Primary School Kim Mulkey

Objective Each early childhood education teacher (K-3 and specials) will demonstrate basic knowledge of video production by creating a video between 30 seconds and 1 minute that incorporates still shots, video, text, and audio.

Goals Introduce digital storytelling and story mapping Preparation of materials prior to video production Storyboarding Video editing using video, images, and audio Saving formats

Rational Teachers need to learn to create their own video for two reasons. They need to publish their student work in digital formats for others to view They will then be able to better instruct their students on the use of video editing software.

NETS-T 1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness and creative processes 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

Prerequisites and Brochure Basic Intech skills Basic file network management Audacity Publisher Brochure Video Brochure

Door #1 Behind Door Number 1 is the old fashioned way to publish a story...handwritten. While sometimes that is appropriate, you can settle for door number 1… Or trade it in for door number 2.

Door #2 Behind Door Number 2 is a step into technological publishing. You can use programs like Word Stationery Studio Publisher. Do you want to settle for Door Number 2… Or trade it in for Door Number 3?

Door #3 I can see that you have all chosen Door Number 3, because you are here to learn how to take your students’ great writing and turn them into digital stories.

Digital Storytelling Start with a great story Preparation is key Provides an emotional element More examples http://blog.woodward.edu/waps/ http://www.digitales.us/index.php

Story Mapping

Storyboarding Storyboard

Step 1 Get File Ready Create a new folder on desktop-name it Everything thing you think you might use needs to be in this folder. Copy the sample folder from the network to folder on the desktop. Refer to resource sheet for audio and image sources. Create a storyboard guideline—Each participant should look at contents of the folder and create their storyboard.

Step 2 Open Movie Maker “Walk” through the initial page— Tasks Each section is numbered Capture Edit Movie Finish Movie Collections Show how to create a new folder. Storyboard-Timeline Audio-Video Tracks

Step 3 Import pictures—single and multiple at once (ctrl A, or ctrl select) Drag to bottom Extend or make shorter

Step 4 Import video Drag to bottom Edit by cutting and deleting

Step 5 I like to do transitions first, because the audio and music jump sometimes if you put it in first. A sampling of transitions Create titles and credits Show auto feature—It will change your order.

Step 6 Import audio or music— You can not have audio and music in the same track (unless one is on a video,) but there are ways to add music over audio, but it requires creating video first. Drag to bottom Edit sound

Step 7-Saving To save this project Go to File…Save…name the file. It saves in a Movie Maker format. It is like creating something in Word. It can be edited.

Step 7-Saving To create a video Click on “Save to my computer” Give the video a name and choose where you want it saved. Click next Depending on how you are going to use the video, depends on how to save the next part.

Step 7-Saving If you want to show it in your classroom or put on a CD, click next to create best quality for computer playback. If you want to put it on EdLine (or other online portal,) click “show more choices” choose other settings--Video for Broadband (512 kbps). This will allow a smaller file to be uploaded. Once a video is created, it is like printing from Word. You can not edit the “printed-video” version. You must go back to the original Movie Maker file to edit, and then create another video.

Assessment Rubrics

Assessment and Evaluation Copy and paste video to network folder—Public, Tech Tuesday, Digital Stories Please view 2 videos from the class You will receive an email tomorrow with a link to a Google Doc Form Please submit the critique of the 2 videos and evaluation of the workshop
