Participants made two-alternative, forced-choice color decisions for dresses with superimposed fast on (black trace), triangle (dark gray trace), or fast off (light gray trace) rotating gratings. (c) The mean change in the PSE for fast on and fast off sawtooth stimulation relative to triangle-wave stimulation for the w/g (n = 11) and b/bl (n = 7) groups. The error bars represent ±1 SE. (d) The change in the PSE (relative to the triangle-wave condition) when fast on and fast off gratings were superimposed on the dress. There was wide individual variation in the PSE for the triangle-wave condition (x-axis) with a split around the 50% mark for participants in the b/bl (blue markers) and w/g (yellow markers) groups. Furthermore, the effects of fast on and off stimulation (filled and hollow markers, respectively) on the PSE appeared roughly consistent for the w/g and b/bl groups. It is noteworthy that changing the apparent brightness of the dress shifted color perception in the same direction for all observers.
