Projectiles (2D) A projectile is any object that is in a state of freefall, or in other words an object that is only acted upon by the force of gravity.
Goal: To projectile motions Objectives: 1)To understand freefall motions in 1 D 2)To understand freefall motions in 2D 3)To understand air drag and terminal.

Free fall occurs whenever an object is acted upon by gravity alone.

November 20, 2017 Free Fall

Drill – Take out Homework What force(s) are acting on an object in free fall? What is the acceleration of an object in free fall?

Stress Ball, Ball of Paper, Eraser If you drop a stress ball, ball of paper, and an eraser from the same height at the same time, which object will hit the ground first? Vote!

Free Fall Assuming that air resistance is zero – no drag force. Only force of gravity acts on object. Acceleration = acceleration due to gravity = -9.8 m/s2

Free Fall - Scenarios Object is dropped. Object is thrown downward. Object is thrown upward.

Example 1 – Whiteboards! A coin drops out of someone’s wallet. Find its displacement after 0.30 seconds.

Example 2 A flower pot falls from the window ledge on the third story of a house. The window is 5.8 m above the ground. How fast is it moving when it hits the ground?

Example 3 A student drops their phone from the top of the bleachers. What is the velocity of the phone after 1.2 seconds? How far did the phone travel during this time?

Example 4 A cat falls from a window 3.5 meters above the sidewalk. How fast is it moving when it lands on its feet?
