Matthew 17:1-13 (ESV) pp. Luke 9:28-36 & Mark 9:2-13 The Transfiguration Matthew 17:1-13 (ESV) pp. Luke 9:28-36 & Mark 9:2-13

1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.

12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

Shone like the sun, white as light (Mt 17:2) Dazzling white (Lk 9:29) Radiant, intensely white as no one on earth could bleach them (Mk 9:3) Like the sun shining in full strength (Rev 1:16) Clothing was white as snow (Dan 7:9)

POINT #1: Jesus IS the Christ Know who you are, know your identity You are a disciple of the Christ!

30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”— not knowing what he said. (Lk 9:30-33)

Master/Lord/Rabbi, it is good that we are here Master/Lord/Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

POINT 2: Where are you making and setting up your tent? 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Phil 3:20)

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Mt 6:19- 21)

…“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man …“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev 21:3-4)

9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” (Rev 7:9-12)

POINT 2: Where are you making and setting up your tent? Get running as a believer! Make your tent in heaven. As an unbeliever, it’s time to get in the race!

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. (Mt 17:5-8) **see 2 Peter 1:17-18

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. (Mt 17:6) Genesis 17:3 Ezekiel 1:4-28 Revelation 1:17

5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” (Isaiah 6:5)

POINT 3: What is our response to our holy God? Awe, fear, reverence! The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! (Psalm 99:1)

POINT 3: What is our response to our holy God? Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” (Rev 4:11) WORSHIP

POINT 4: Rise and have no fear 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” (Mt 17:7)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! (Romans 8:1) “No condemnation now I dread, Jesus and all in him is mine. Alive in him, my living head and clothed in righteousness divine. Bold I approach the eternal throne and claim the crown through Christ my own.” (And Can It Be by Charles Wesley)

CONCLUSION Jesus IS the Christ! Where are you making and setting up your tent? What is our response to our holy God? RISE UP and have no fear!
