Governance The student will understand that as a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of government also increases. Think back to when you were in elementary school. How are the rules more complex in middle school? EQ: Tomochichi and James Oglethorpe were leaders of different societies. Do you think Indians and colonists had to adapt to one another’s rules and government?

Colonial Power Players in North America Georgia becomes a colony Great Britain (England) Spain France Who laid claim to America? Students could Map these territories What is the significance to the light blue region? It was unclear who controlled this region. Countries laid claim to it, but in reality Native Americans still ruled here. Traders and trappers moved in and out this was the wild frontier. For GA and the other colonies it was a defensive liability.

The 1st European settlements in Georgia were Spanish Missions along the coast and barrier islands. After the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, Great Britain began to claim a larger share of North America. Have students Map GA’s Spanish settlements. Use GA map from text simply enlarge the coastal region. Students should include barrier island names, rivers, Spanish territories and create their own key.

Fort King George 1721-1727 Great Britain claimed Georgia in 1663, but did not plan to settle there until 1717 There were many different proposals about how to settle Georgia. Some envisioned a colony of riches (Robert Montgomery) Others saw Georgia as a new beginning for England’s poor.
