Applications Aerospace : Space shuttle power supplies , satellite power supplies , aircraft power systems . Commercial : Advertising , heating , central refrigeration , computer and office equipment , uninterruptible power supplies etc. Telecommunication : battery chargers , power supplies (DC and UPS) . Transportation : battery chargers , traction control of electrical vehicles , electrical locomotives , street cars , automotive electronics

Advantages of Power Electronic Converters High efficiency due to low loss in power semiconductor devices High reliability of power electronic converter system Long life and less maintenance due to the absence of any moving parts . Fast dynamic response of the power electronic system as compared to electro-mechanical converter system .

Disadvantages of Power Electronic Converters AC to Dc and AC to AC converters operate at a low input power factor under certain operating conditions in order to avoid to low PF , some special measures had to be adopted. Regeneration of power is difficult in power electronic converter system . Power electronic controls have low overload capacity . These converters must , therefore , be rated for taking momentary overloads . As such , cost of power electronics controller may increase .
