BGU eLearning Certification For Faculty Professor: Dr. Dale A. Dan Week 1, Lecture 1A

Outline Lecture 1-A covers the following topic: Introduction to the World of eLearning

Introduction to the World of eLearning A World Connected Online

Introduction to the World of eLearning Dear Students: Why eLearning? Why this course? What has happened to cause such a focus on Online Learning? Here are some quick statistics to help us understand this better: Come with me –let’s take a walk …

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d Online Education Industry Continues to Grow During the 2006-2007 academic year, 66 percent of U.S. two-year and four-year Title IV degree-granting postsecondary institutions offered college-level distance education courses. Source: National Center for Education Statistics Today that number of Title IV postsecondary institutions that offer college-level distance learning has reached more than 80 percent. Source: Eduventures, Inc.

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d Among public institutions, 97 percent of two-year and 89 percent of four-year colleges offered college-level distance learning courses. Among private, for-profit institutions, 18 percent of two-year and 70 percent of four-year colleges offered distance learning courses. Among private, nonprofit institutions, 53 percent offered college-level distance learning courses. Source: National Center for Education Statistics Among Title IV institutions, the most common factors affecting the provision of distance learning courses were meeting student demand for flexible schedules (68 percent), providing access to college for students who would otherwise not have access (67 percent), making more courses available (46 percent), and seeking to increase student enrollment (45 percent). Source: National Center for Education Statistics

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d Enrollment in Online Education Courses An estimated 12.2 million students were enrolled in college-level, credit-granting distance learning courses during the 2006-07 academic year. Source: National Center for Education Statistics Between 1990 and 2005, students under the age of 25 enrolled in college-level, credit granting distance learning courses increased by 33 percent, while enrolled in such courses by students aged 25 and older rose by only 18 percent. However, from 2005 to 2016, the number of students under the age of 25 enrolled in distance learning courses is projected to increase only 15 percent compared to a projected increase of 21 percent for students aged 25 and older. Source: National Center for Education Statistics

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d A survey of more than 1,500 prospective adult students found that close to 50 percent felt that additional education is worth more today as a way of improving employment prospects as a result of the current recession. Source: Eduventures, Inc. The same survey revealed that 42 percent of participants said they were more likely to enroll in an online education course or program in response to current economic conditions. Source: Eduventures, Inc. The number of students enrolled in online courses or programs offered by Title IV postsecondary institutions is projected to reach 3.5 million by 2013. Source: Eduventures, Inc.

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d Employer Perception of Online Education Most employers - more than 62 percent - have a favorable attitude toward distance learning and view the value of this educational format as being equal to or greater than that of face-to-face instruction. Source: Eduventures, Inc. A 2005 survey revealed that 29 percent of corporate tuition reimbursements went to online or hybrid programs. Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d I am also placing a few resources in our ‘Faculty Resources’ section of this course – kindly read these. These are quality articles that help us understand the ‘why’ of eLearning today from a statistical perspective and one that addresses Math that is such a feared subject – how online is helping to reduce this fear: Here are titles of some of the articles you need to read: Online Learning in the United States: 2006 Online Learning in the United States: 2008 Adults Learning Math Online: A Surprising Harmony E-Learning in Romania: example of international growth of E-Learning

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d There is no question that eLearning is growing at a rapid pace. The world is becoming smaller through Online Classrooms are becoming more global and reachable through Online Student visa issues are almost obliterated as international students sit in their homes and enjoy a USA Degree with fewer expenses Three key factors were ushered in that changed business forever: Technology Globalism Diversity/Multiculturalism

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d eLearning Education answers the demands being made by all three factors: Students learn to master technology as they study with us Through global classrooms – they learn how to interact and work with various cultures: I recall the largest online class I had with some 30 students from 19 different countries. It was phenomenal to see them collaborate, share faith, experiences, cultural uniqueness etc. This is the ‘reality’ of what most students will face as they leave our graduation stage and enter the real world.

Introduction to the World of eLearning cont’d OK … so pause for a moment  Do we understand why we are here? Yes, because eLearning is not going anywhere so in order to remain competitive, we will need to at least offer Online Learning as an ‘option’ to all students. As our institutions enjoy global expansion – we want to use online as much as possible to increase communication while reducing costs As we move forward and explore the amazing world of eLearning, as each of you enjoy sharpening your skills to deal with this new reality which is a blessing to us and our students in so many ways, let us ask the following question please: How prepared am I to deal with the world of E-Learning? Refer to this Week’s exercise “eLearning Questionnaire – Self Evaluation Tool” – please complete this and submit accordingly.

End of Lecture 1-A The End This is the end of Lecture 1-A Kindly let me know if you have any questions I am here to serve you!
