E-books, metadata and the digital School Library - a case for standards

First some rehearsal… LOM MLR Common (web etc.) standards Learning Technology Standard Metadata standards Standard infrastructure Data & file formats MLR (Metadata for Learning Resources) LOM (Learning Object Metadata)

Connecting the dots… A Case The ”pedagogical” digital School Library

Connecting the dots… Metadata Everything is mapped to the Swedish metadata application profile. The AP is based on DC, MLR and IMS Access for All Metadata can also be accessed according to other schemas through API:s, such as LRMI. Or trough export (such as LOM and MARC)

Connecting the dots… Standard infrastructure (the Curriculum as Linked Data) E-books or parts of e-books can be connected to the curriculum using Linked Data and and metadata schemas based on the AP.

Connecting the dots… Standard infrastructure II (SSO & ID federation) Login can be handled via the national digital identity federation and SSO service for schools, called skolfederation.se In fact, SSO is what keeps it all together - an unsexy but crucial piece of standard infrastructure.

Connecting the dots… Learning Technology Standards The user can make a collection/package of e- books (and other digital resources), that is kept together by metadata, Linked Data and IMS CC and/or ThinCan. In theory, a collection can be used in any digital learning environment, such as a LMS.

Connecting the dots… Data & File formats Most e-books use ePub. We are targeting ePub 3 and eduPub. Both for user- publishing and for reading and manipulating learning content. It is based on standard web technology, which makes it easier for us to do what we want to do…

Thanks!
