WWI Serbia saw Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of its territory and Austria-Hungary’s annexation of the territory led to hostilities which eventually led to war. Nationalism led smaller countries to fight for independence and militarism led larger countries to settle disputes on the battlefield. Deadly new weapons such as tanks and poison gas added to the horrors of trench warfare and turned the war into a stalemate.

Watershed Event The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was the event that triggered the war.

Franz Ferdinand and Family

The Assassin

Causes… The Berlin Conference divided up land in Africa- Old disputes and hard feelings from Imperialistic conquest High levels of nationalistic feelings created an atmosphere of competition

Causes… A buildup of weapons and militaristic attitudes among European countries Europe gets itself tangled into a system of alliances for protection

Europe, 1914

World War 1 Warfare New inventions such as machine guns, chemical warfare, airplanes, and tanks brought the old ways of fighting wars to an end Trench warfare resulted in long periods of “stalemate”, where neither side gained or lost large amounts of territory.

British Trench

German Trench

World War 1 Warfare Disease in the trenches killed millions of soldiers- infested with rats, waste, corpses.

World War 1 Warfare Naval combat played an important role as nations tried to create blockades on the Atlantic in order to cut off each others’ access to food and equipment.

Europe, 1919

Effects The Austria-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires were split up into smaller pieces Germany, blamed for starting the war lost large amounts of land and was forced to pay war reparation$ The horrors of the war caused some people to reject imperialistic/capitalistic ideas leading to a rise in the spread of socialism/communism
