Review from Last Class Answer the following questions on a piece of paper: What is a numerator? What does it tell us? What is a denominator? What does it tell us? What is an equivalent fraction?
Numerator The numerator tells us how many parts of the whole are being considered. 1 2 1 green part
Denominator The denominator tells us the total number of equal parts in the whole object. 1 2 2 equal parts
Equivalent Fractions / Reducing Equivalent fractions have the same value, even though they look different. Why? When you multiply/divide the numerator AND denominator by the same number, the fraction keeps its value.

Math 801A: Mathematical Operations – Adding Fractions Mathematics Essentials March 5th, 2017
Lesson Introduction Today I will... add fractions concretely, pictorially, and symbolically add fractions in problem situations using the most appropriate method
Adding Fractions Try the journaling activities on page 35 (example 1 and 2). How are these similar? How are they different?
Adding Fractions with Like Denominators These are the easiest types of fractions to add Add the numerators together and keep the same denominator!
Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators Steps to take to solve problems with unlike denominators: Draw a picture or use fraction strips Find a “common denominator” - make the pictures have the same number of equal parts (same denominators) Add the numerators and use the common denominator
Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators E.g. 1 3 + 1 6 E.g. 2 6 + 1 6 E.g. 3 6
