S.W.B.S.T. Somebody Wanted But So Then

S.W.B.S.T. This is a summarizing strategy that helps you write down the main points of a story in an easy, accurate way.

S.W.B.S.T. S = SOMEBODY – the main character (protagonist) W = WANTED – What do they want? What is their motivation? B = BUT – What was the problem (conflict) that kept them from getting/having what they want? S = SO – How did the character try to solve the problem or what happened due to their conflict? T = THEN – what was the ending/resolution to the story?

DRAW THIS CHART ON YOUR PAPER. SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN DRAW THIS CHART ON YOUR PAPER.

PRACTICING S.W.B.S.T. Your teacher will give you a short synopsis of the story “Cinderella” - Use the information to work with a partner to complete the information on the chart for the story of “Cinderella.”

Example: “Cinderella” SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN Cinderella to go to the ball her evil stepmother prohibited it her fairy godmother performed magic and granted Cinderella’s wish Cinderella was able to attend the ball and met, and eventually married, the prince. SUMMARY STATEMENT(s): Cinderella wanted togo the ball, but her evil stepmother prohibited it, so her fairy godmother performed magic and granted Cinderella’s wish. Then Cinderella was able to attend the ball, and she met, and eventually married, the prince.

Here’s another example on the next slide for the story “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Example: “Little Red Riding Hood” SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN Little Red Riding Hood to visit her grandmother She disobeyed her mother and left the path and met a deceitful and very hungry wolf the wolf ate Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother the hunter saved them and killed the wolf. Little Red vowed never to leave the path again SUMMARY STATEMENT(s): Little Red Riding Hood wanted to visit her grandmother, but she disobeyed her mother when she left the path and met a deceitful and very hungry wolf. So the wolf ate Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother. Then the hunter saved them and killed the wolf, and Little Red Riding Hood vowed never to leave the path again.
