The Plot Mountain

Plot - Review Definition – A series of related events that make up a story or drama Example - When you write a short summary of a story, you would be describing Plot

Plot Mountain 3. Climax 4. Falling Action 2. Rising Action 5. Resolution 1. Exposition

Exposition Definition – The introduction of characters and setting. The who and where of the story. Example – Cinderella lives unhappily with her evil stepmother and stepsisters.

Rising Action Definition – The introduction of the conflict or problem, and the events that advance the action of the plot Example – Cinderella wants to go to the ball, but can’t. Her fairy godmother helps her.

Climax Definition – The moment of greatest intensity when we learn what the outcome of the conflict is going to be Example- Cinderella falls in love with the Prince, but loses her glass slipper and returns to rags.

Falling Action Definition – The events caused by the climax and leading up to the resolution. Example – The Prince finds Cinderella. She and the Prince marry. Her stepmother and stepsisters become her servants.

Resolution Definition – The final part of the story. The conflict is resolved. Example – Cinderella and the Prince live happily ever after.

“For the Birds” Exposition – Small birds and larger bird on telephone wire Rising Action – Small birds make fun of larger bird, peck at him so that he will fall off wire Climax – Small birds realize that they will also fall off the wire Falling Action – Small birds fly off wire and lose feathers Resolution – Larger bird laughs at smaller birds

“Partly Cloudy” Exposition – Clouds and storks set in a sky full of clouds Rising Action – Main cloud makes dangerous baby animals that often hurt his stork Climax – Main cloud gets upset because he thinks his stork has left him for another cloud Falling Action – Stork returns to his cloud with protective gear Resolution – Cloud continues to make dangerous animals which his stork can now safely carry
