WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF KEEPING A PET?

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) gives people advice about animal welfare. Unfortunately RSPCA officers have to investigate over 110,000 complaints of cruelty to animals every year.

How would you know if an animal was being mistreated?

Why do you think some people mistreat their pets?

‘Might is Right!’

RSPCA inspectors go to the premises where they have been informed that there is cruelty taking place. They speak to the animal’s owner, and give advice about how to care for it.

If the animal needs veterinary care, the owner will be told how the animal should be treated.

After a few days the inspector will return to check on the animal's progress and see whether the owners have taken heed of their advice.

If an animal is in a very bad condition or if the advice is not followed, the owner could end up being taken to court. The maximum penalty for mis-treatment of animals is six months imprisonment and/or £5,000 fine.

What skills and attitudes would you need to develop if you wanted to become an RSPCA inspector?

The Dogs Trust is a charity which re-homes thousands of stray and abandoned dogs. Their aim is to give them a new start with a new family who can give them the love and attention they deserve.

Design a leaflet for Dogs Trust customers setting out the pros and cons of keeping a dog. Leaflets are a kind of open letter designed to be handed out to people, either by hand, by post, inserted in newspapers, left in shops, cafes, libraries... anywhere where they will catch a person's eye.
