History of Macadamias in New Zealand 1978 – Okaihau, 14,000 Hawaiian varieties, no crops for 20 years. 1981 - South Head 10,000 picking varieties 1982-1999 - NZ Mac Growers Co-Op; 114 growers = 70,000 trees 1997 - NZ Macadamia Society: 70 growers = 40,000 trees. Dropped to 12 growers = 20,000 trees in 2016 INDUSTRY IN DECLINE from 2000– 90% low producing Picking varieties 1958-1986 - VARIETY RESEARCH by MAF, DSIR, Hort Research 1983–Papatu Rd, Manutuke, Vanessa’s variety research began 1993-2002. 42 varieties trialled; 27 new imported Dropping varieties trialled alongside 15 existing varieties at Torere. 2005 - TML dropping varieties enter market – industry backlash! 2017 GROWTH INDUSTRY - 90% high producing TML Dropping varieties The industry decline due to wrong varieties. After waiting 5 years for their 1st crop and then having to pick them before the rats did and spray for GVB or lose your crop – was not growers wanted or expected. Hundreds of trees were being chopped down and orchards abandoned when I joined the NZMS in 1997.
