TML Team – Vanessa Hayes & Rod Husband; 2 fulltime, 1 part-time & 5 seasonal staff (Torere/Gisborne) Torere - Nursery (30,000 plant capacity) & Organic certified Orchard (3,000 tree capacity); produced 10ton Nut in Shell this year; L2 Quarantine and Variety Research Trial Block, on 11ha solely owned Maori land. Torere - Monthly Field Days for new growers, training onsite for horticultural students & orchard managers 01

History of Macadamias in New Zealand 1978 – Okaihau, 14,000 Hawaiian varieties, no crops for 20 years. 1981 - South Head 10,000 picking varieties 1982-1999 - NZ Mac Growers Co-Op; 114 growers = 70,000 trees 1997 - NZ Macadamia Society: 70 growers = 40,000 trees. Dropped to 12 growers = 20,000 trees in 2016 INDUSTRY IN DECLINE from 2000– 90% low producing Picking varieties 1958-1986 - VARIETY RESEARCH by MAF, DSIR, Hort Research 1983–Papatu Rd, Manutuke, Vanessa’s variety research began 1993-2002. 42 varieties trialled; 27 new imported Dropping varieties trialled alongside 15 existing varieties at Torere. 2005 - TML dropping varieties enter market – industry backlash! 2017 GROWTH INDUSTRY - 90% high producing TML Dropping varieties The industry decline due to wrong varieties. After waiting 5 years for their 1st crop and then having to pick them before the rats did and spray for GVB or lose your crop – was not growers wanted or expected. Hundreds of trees were being chopped down and orchards abandoned when I joined the NZMS in 1997.

01 Torere Macadam Macadamias Today 2017 – TML released 9 of the best dropping varieties; with 3 varieties each for Early, Mid-season or Late-season harvest: to suit different regional locations or to fit in with existing land-use options. TML – Varieties exclusive; IP, sole rights and grower non-propagation agreements apply. 2017 – Vanessa, appointed NZMS Vice President to rebuild industry based on TML varieties 2018/19 – National Macadamia Grower Co-op & Regional Grower Cluster; plans in progress 01

Napier – Kernel processing; Crack, sort, size & return kernel in 5kg vacuum sealed bags to Gisborne All value add products are produced in Gisborne except the chocolate coating (Waikato Valley Chocs). 2020 – Tairawhiti Macadamia Capital with Processing factory powered by macadamia shells, producing range of high value products on location with café & gift outlet for tourists. 01
