J’s Rad Photo Rip-offs By your boy, Jesse Way
Intro Well, I’m back once again. Now in the past, my projects have consisted of little but cringey fanboying. That will all change. Today, I bring you two pictures from well known photographers and how I plagiarised replicated them for the benefit of the class.
Karl Schmolz Firstly, hailing from Germany comes the architectural photographer Karl Schmolz (1917-1986). While there’s barely enough English language information to rub together, he apparently took after his dad Hugo, who was also in the trade.
Destroyed Cathedral One of his most famous pictures is of Cologne Cathedral after it had been bombed in WWII. While we do have a cathedral of our own, obviously I can’t very well replicate this one. I mean, can you imagine the picture? So I think you’ll all forgive me for choosing a more manageable picture.
Staircase This is the image of the (you’re going to make me say it, aren’t you?) Rheinich Westfalische bank. I chose this picture because it seemed easy enough and I did appreciate the forced perspective shown. The shadows are a winner too. Now, I tried to copy this using the stairs in the college, but…
My staircase I know artists should be proud of their work and stick by it and all, but pictures like this kind of make it hard. I mean, I actually had to turn it diagonally to even get it to align the right way. I don’t know that I’d find a better staircase around here, but I wasn’t about to travel to the rye bread-whatever bank to get it right. Then again, with a tilted staircase in monochrome, I suppose I did get the bare essence of the photo intact, so there’s that.
Lee Friedlander Sorry about getting so moody there, but I guess all geniuses do that from time to time. Speaking of which, we’ve got the American Lee Friedlander (1934-), and I’ll be using his own sour expression for my work. Now, our friend Lee has been focussing on social landscape, and his picture counts as both street photography and a self-portrait.
Vampire state of mind And here it is. Lee took this baby down in Noo Yawk. Look at that striking face, dude looks like a punk rocker with that stare of his. Or shoot, maybe even one of the livin’ dead. I don’t know about youse, but I’m pretty partial to that creepy stuff. So I says to myself “I hafta make a villain of my own.” Eh…It seemed like the right idea at the time.
Vampire state of mind (So good I named it twice) Alright, so here’s what I did. Now, I wanted to do this to myself, but I realised that my chubby round Asian face looks nothing like the original. There was a bit more editing involved in this one, including darkening the foreground and lightening the background. It was the opposite to what I set out to do, but I’m still a lot more proud of this particular one, because it looks equally evil to the original.
End Well, I hope you enjoyed this little photo show, and aren’t in the mood to throw anything at me. Till next time, Jesse Way, signing out.
