Data Center Architecture Emerging Trends in Technology Fiber is becoming predominant over copper Smaller data centers emerging in non-conventional markets Cloud computing – providing computing as a service rather than a product, via the internet IP Cameras are replacing CCTV for video surveillance 10G fiber uses LC TX/RX single pair 40G fiber uses a 12-fiber MTP configuration 100G fiber uses a 24-fiber MTP configuration Cat6A copper cable is required for 10G Ethernet As we researched the data center architecture trends, some of the things that prevailed as emerging topics in our discussions were: Fiber is becoming predominant over copper. Smaller data centers emerging in non-conventional markets. These are the 5, 10 or 15 cabinet data centers utilizing predominantly copper and fiber applications. Cloud computing – providing computing as a service rather than a product, via the internet. IP Cameras are replacing CCTV for video surveillance. More and more data centers and larger structured cabling projects are being installed to simply support video surveillance. 10 Gigabit Fiber uses traditional LC connections While 40 and 100 Gigabit Fiber uses a 12- and 24-fiber MTP configuration, respectfully. Cat6A copper cable is required and is the standard for 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Selling Fiber vs. Copper Fiber is appealing to larger operations than Copper Less weight than copper cable Fewer analog problems (Attenuation, Alien Crosstalk) More available bandwidth Less power required to operate high speed interfaces OM3 is predominant, OM4 emerging More difficult termination process than copper As mentioned, one of the key trends in data center networking is the movement from copper to fiber. However, the ultimate decision lies with the customer and their particular preference. The propensity to lean more towards fiber installations is especially prevalent in larger operations. Fiber weighs less than copper cable and makes for easier installations Fewer analog problems like Attenuation and Alien Crosstalk Fiber offers more available bandwidth It takes less power to operate high speed interfaces and less power relates to a smaller carbon footprint OM3 is predominant at the moment but OM4 is quickly an emerging trend The only caveat to fiber installations is they have a more difficult termination process than copper

Selling Fiber vs. Copper Copper offers some unique benefits to smaller systems Easier to terminate Switching hardware is less expensive Alien crosstalk is less likely to be problematic with fewer cables Able to support Power over Ethernet devices (WAPs, IP Cameras) Power budget is less of a concern to a smaller server count operation However, copper installations also offer their own unique benefits. As mentioned, copper installs are easier to terminate Switching hardware is less expensive with copper interfaces Alien crosstalk is less likely to be problematic with fewer cables like in a smaller data center Copper installs are able to support Power over Ethernet devices like WAPs and IP Cameras And lastly for smaller server count operations, power budgets are less of a concern.

Procyon Development What IT users were looking for: High-density in smaller spaces for greater capacity Easy installations with simple plug-and-play connectivity Integrated cable management for better air circulation to improve component durability Trouble-free access to individual ports Fiber components that can accommodate future bandwidth applications In the development of OCC’s newest data center and structured cabling solution Procyon, we worked alongside data center professionals and listened to their every day challenges. From those conversations, we learned about what works and what doesn’t and we put that knowledge to work developing the Procyon family of products. IT users wanted High-density in smaller spaces for greater capacity with an equal or reduced footprint than competitors Easy installations with simple plug-and-play connectivity. Pre-terminated is very important to the IT user. Integrated cable management features that provide better air circulation to improve component durability Trouble-free access to individual ports to facilitate adds and changes quickly, reduce maintenance costs and reduce downtime. Fiber components that can configure for ten gigabit now but can easily be replaced one cassette at a time for forty to one hundred gigabit applications

Procyon Development The Procyon Architecture mandated: High Density products 144 LC in 1RU High fiber count for emerging 40/100G Ethernet Cable Management features Accommodate high density patching requirements Conceal cables for a neat and clean look during operation Thermal accessories Assist cooling for higher power servers Lower their HVAC operating costs From that list of IT user requirements, the Procyon development process and design mandated: High Density products – at least 144 LCs in 1RU and even higher fiber counts for emerging 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet Cable Management features to accommodate high density patching requirements and to conceal cables for a neat and clean look during operation Thermal accessories to assist cooling for higher power servers and to lower their HVAC operating costs

Procyon Development The result of this research was A modular, unified and comprehensive system approach to data center design and structured cabling We were challenged to incorporate all of these features and the result of our research and development was a scalable, unified and comprehensive approach to product design. Procyon by OCC is a complete system approach to data center design and structured cabling rarely seen in the industry . These solutions have been carefully designed and constructed to offer components that work great individually but even better when combined.

Procyon Fiber Panel Forward Features Accepts 12 cassettes for either 144 LC’s or 48 MTP’s in 1RU – currently the highest density achievable in a 1RU space on the market today 3-Tier Coupling to Cassettes for vertical separation of entering/exiting cable 3-Tier coupling mechanism has waterfalls for either up or down vertical exit path. The small size of the Procyon cassettes fit perfectly into the Procyon fiber optic panel. Designed for high-density in a small footprint, the Procyon fiber panel accepts twelve cassettes, accommodating either one hundred forty four LC or forty eight MT connections. With twelve fiber MT connectors that equates to five hundred seventy six fibers in one rack unit. Not only is that one of the highest density configurations available but with integrated and proprietary cable management and easy access features, this panel offers innovative versatility for data center connectivity. In addition, OCC’s pre-terminated HD Bend Tolerant trunk cables and jumpers make connections effortless.

Procyon Fiber Panel Rear Features Cable storage at rear allows for cassette travel. Temp-Grip soft material organizes trunk sub groups in semi-rigid position during install. Permanent clamp fixes sub groups in position when completed.

Vertical orientation is an emerging trend in high performance switching hardware as a means to dissipate heat vertically between blade modules of the switch. Procyon’s focus on end user convenience requires the orientation of the connectivity to be equivalent. This unique system allows the Procyon Panel to be mounted vertically to easily complement switch and server hardware ports. The bracket allows up to ten Procyon panels to be mounted and cabling is easily accessible using a spool based cable entry and exit system. This is a unique selling point to the Procyon system and mirrors active product connections.

Pre-terminated MT trunk cables, jumpers and even variations using keyed or secure LC options are all 100% quality tested for proven connections.

This 1 RU panel houses 48 Cat 6A ports and just like the fiber panel, can be mounted vertically using the Vertical Mounting Kit. This vertical mounting is not only unique to Procyon but unlike any other copper solutions we have seen in the industry.

These rugged and shielded assemblies allow for fast installations with a unique plug and play keyed connectivity and an easy to remove metal pulling eye. Individually shielded pair cables are designed for grounding purposes and compatibility with a variety of cables including Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A, and Cat 7A configurations. This rack to rack pre-terminated shielded solution eliminates any concerns of alien crosstalk and the need for Alien Crosstalk testing in the field.
