New Curriculum and Assessment How has the National Curriculum changed New Curriculum and Assessment How has the National Curriculum changed? How are we measuring progress?
The Story So Far? Children were taught objectives that gave them a level. Every child would move on once they had understood those objectives. In each year group there would be a wide range of children at different points on the ladder. 1
Why Change It? Children were being taught key skills but many lacked depth Internationally the UK does not compare well with other countries. Gaps in children’s knowledge and understanding were appearing Parents found Levels confusing
The New Curriculum Expectations have increased. There are objectives and expectations for each Year Group. There is a new focus on depth in children’s learning. There will still be SATs tests in Year 6 at the end of KS2. Schools must have a clear system for measuring progress and attainment.
Depth and Coverage Depth Judged as basic, advancing or deep learners Attainment Judged as being ….below at or above age related expectations
Progress Progress will be measured by … … looking at the children’s books over time. … talking to the children about their learning. … monitoring the depth of learning.

What is Basic learning? Has a low level of cognitive demand. Involves following instructions Teaching is based on modelling and explaining Progress includes acquiring and refining Pupils will: name, describe, follow instructions, complete tasks, recall information, ask basic questions, match, report, measure list, illustrate, label, recognise, tell, repeat, arrange, define, memorise.
What is Advancing learning? Higher cognitive demand and mental processes beyond recall – decision making Teaching is based on reminding and guiding Progress includes applying and practising Pupils will apply skills to solve problems, explain methods, classify, infer, categorise, identify patterns, organise, modify, predict, interpret, summarise, make observations, estimate and compare.
What is Deep learning? Complex and abstract cognitive demands. Problems with multi steps or more than one answer. Requires justification of answers. Teaching involves coaching, probing and deep questioning Progress will revolve around deepening and extending Pupils will solve non-routine problems, appraise, explain concepts, hypothesise, investigate, cite evidence, design, create, prove.

Classroom Monitor Each objective will be assessed for depth The aim is to achieve an advanced depth or above. You don’t move on to harder objectives in different year groups. You go deeper and deeper!
Level descriptors (Level 1 to Level 5) Old Arrangements New Arrangements Level descriptors (Level 1 to Level 5) Year group expectations for Maths, English and Science and in key stages for all other subjects Expectation that pupils attain Level 4 by the end of Year 6 Expectations that 85% of pupils attain the expectations for English, Maths and Science by the end of KS2 Level 2b by the end of Year 2 Year group expectations to be met by the end of Year 2 External tests at the end of KS2 for: maths; reading and SPAG; teacher assessments for writing External tests at the end of KS2 for reading, maths and SPAG and teacher assessment to remain in writing Use made of the sublevels to define expected progress through each year group. Schools ask to develop own tracking systems to ensure that pupils are making progress. c Focus Education 2014

What Do You Need To Know? We will tell you if your child is on track to meet their Year Group Expectations. We will tell you where your child fits into the 5 categories on the previous slide. (Below, At, Exceeding, etc.) We will tell you at what depth they are performing. And of course we will tell you what your child needs to do next to progress.
