94. ALLITERATION & ASSONANACE “Alliteration is a repetition of consonant sounds. Assonance is a repetition of vowel sounds. Both are used for dramatic, poetic, and rhetorical effect.”

Alliteration and Assonance are examples of Figures of Speech which are words or phrases that are used in non-literal ways for rhetorical effect.

Figures of Speech are important because they are used to better describe or explain a concept. Figures of Speech are not literal, so the reader must often ‘infer’ to understand them.

Figure of Speech Example 1: Alliteration B C D F G H J K L M N P Q R S T V W X Y Z Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds. Come and clean your closet. Shut the shutter before you shudder Lazy lizards lying like lumps. Go and gather the green leaves. Boil the butter and bring it to the bank. Please put your pen away. The snake slithered silently along the sunny sidewalk.

Alliteration Example This Tooth by Lee Bennet Hopkins I jiggled it jaggled it jerked it. I pushed and pulled and poked it. But – As soon as I stopped, And left it alone This tooth came out On its very own!

Alliteration Example: The Tongue Twister Peter Piper Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, How many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick?

Figure of Speech Example 2: Assonance A E I O U Y Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds. The light of the fire is a sight. Go slow over the road. Try as I might, the kite did not fly. The rain ins Spain falls mainly on the plain.

Assonance Example: My Puppy Punched Me in the Eye My puppy punched me in the eye. My rabbit whacked my ear. My ferret gave a frightful cry and roundhouse kicked my rear. My lizard flipped me upside down. My kitten kicked my head. My hamster slammed me to the ground and left me nearly dead. So my advice? Avoid regrets; no matter what you do, don’t ever let your family pets take lessons in kung fu.

Figure of Speech Example 3: Metaphor Metaphors are comparisons of two unlike things to describe something more deeply. The snow is a white blanket. The classroom was a zoo. Her lovely voice was music to my ears. Their home was a prison. Life is a rollercoaster.

Figure of Speech Example 4: Simile Similes are a comparison of two unlike things using ‘like’ or ‘as.’ As American as apple pie. As big as an elephant. As black as coal. As blind as a bat. As brave as a lion. As boring as watching paint dry.

Figure of Speech Example 5: Personification Personification is describing objects with human emotions. Lightning danced on the sky. The wind howled in the night. My alarm clock is yelling. Traffic slowed to a crawl. The avalanche devoured the car.

Which do you think about Figures of Speech Which do you think about Figures of Speech? Do you have the same in your language? Can you write a ten word sentence using alliteration and another with assonance? BRAINSTORM
