DGP – Sentence 2 Parts of Speech

Sentence / Word Bank “Ferdinand,” cried Mercedes, “I believed you were good- hearted, and I was mistaken!” Word Bank: action verb (2), coordinating conjunction (1), linking verb (2), participle (2), pronoun (3), proper noun (2)

Compare Compare your answers to your neighbor’s answers to see if you identified the same action verbs. “I labeled ________ as an action verb because __________.”

Correct Answer “Ferdinand,” cried Mercedes, “I believed you were good- hearted, and I was mistaken!” Ferdinand, Mercedes = proper nouns (names a specific noun) cried, believed = action verbs (shows action) I, you, I = pronouns (takes the place of a noun)

Correct Answer “Ferdinand,” cried Mercedes, “I believed you were good-hearted, and I was mistaken!” were, was = linking verbs (links a noun to an adjective or to another noun) good-hearted, mistaken = participles (verb acting like an adjective) and = coordinating conjunction (joins words, phrases, and clauses)
