The Origin of Species Darwin likely developed his theory of evolution by natural selection in Soon after he began to write a multi volume book explaining.
Evidence for evolution in Darwin’s time came from several sources.
 A. Natural Selection is only one part of the theory of evolution.  B. Theory explain natural phenomena based on observations  C. Evolution states.
Artificial Selection aka Selective Breeding  Darwin noted that plant and animal breeders would breed only the largest hogs, the fastest horses, or the.

AIM: How do comparative studies help trace evolution?
Are birds more closely related to reptiles or mammals?
Fossil Record Definition: The fossil record is all the known fossils and their placements in the formation of rocks and positions in time. Information:
Aim: What evidence do we have that Evolution took place? I. Evolution – living things have changed from ancestors that they have in common. A. Evidence.

Evidence of Evolution Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution. – Theodosius Dobzhansky.
Evidence for evolution Darwin’s key ideas: A. REPRODUCTION: Organisms produce more offspring than can survive B. VARIATION:Variety in traits exist C.
Evidence for Evolution. Fossils More primitive fossil organisms are in older layers, with more complex forms found in upper layers.
Evidences for Evolution. 1. Structural Adaptations –Physical appearance change that increases an organism’s survival –Examples: Mimicry – trying to look.

Presentation transcript:

Evidence that supports evolution

Evidence 1: Biogeography Some organisms tend to be SIMILAR but different in geographically separate areas Ex: zebra in Africa and horses in Mongolia This is due to having a COMMON ancestor but then “evolving” once they were isolated (Gondwanaland)

Evidence 2: The Fossil Record

Caste

Moulds

Frozen relics Mammoth calf

Organisms preserved in amber

Organisms preserved in tar pits

Bone and teeth replaced with stone

How fossils form

Evidence 3: Comparative Anatomy By looking at the structures found in different species of animal, we can see evidence of a COMMON ORIGIN… Ex: Wings of a bird and wings of a bat; bones in the hand of a human and bones in the flipper of a whale

Homologous (same) structures

Analogous (different) structures

Vestigial (not used) organs

Evidence 4: Comparative embryology

Evidence 5: Molecular Biology Every living thing uses DNA Some amino acids are THE SAME between species We are just 2 amino acids difference to a gorilla!

Evidence 6: Domestication We have SELECTED specific traits over generations to turn: A wolf into a poodle! A crabapple into a “granny smith” We select traits and breed plants and animals for specific purposes and “change” it over time
