Intercultural Understanding LSG meeting Autumn term

Intercultural Understanding in the KS2 framework Objectives from all year groups can be broadly grouped into the following themes: Aspects of everyday life, social conventions, greetings, courtesy, celebrations. Geographical knowledge about the country/countries where the language is spoken Representations of a culture Its symbols, art, stories and role models

Addressing the Intercultural Understanding objectives Through dedicated language lessons Through other subject areas Through themed days or weeks Which approaches have you tried? Which work best for particular themes or objectives?

ICU in the dedicated language lesson Using video resources Using authentic resources in the target language (e.g. stories and songs) Teaching vocabulary linked to cultural events or geography of the country Making contact with schools abroad Talk through using resources like Early Start or BBC website. Also clips from Youtube of festivals in other countries and similar resources Share a song and/or story e.g. trad French fables on the Northumberland grid. ‘Savez vous plantez les choux’ etc.

ICU across the curriculum Geography RE and PHSE PE Geography – postcard activity – find where the places are on a map of France. Find counties on map RE – celebrations activity PE – traditional playground games, - focus on Olympics – match flags, newspaper front pages, artefacts to countries hosting the Olympics, Essex ‘Carrying the flame’ resource
