Essential Question Distinguish between a chemical property and a physical property.

Used to help identify substances. Can be observed or measured Physical Properties Characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Color, measurements, texture, shape, or state. Used to help identify substances. Can be observed or measured Physical properties help determine uses.

Physical Properties Density: mass/volume Different from weight, combines mass and amount of space the object takes up. Determine if things can float or sink

Chemical Properties The ability of a substance to combine chemically with other substances. Highly reactive elements are never found by themselves, but low reactive elements almost always are. Describes how a substance changes into a new substance, how it reacts.

Chemical Properties Substances can come together or be broken apart to form new substances. Flammability: the ability of a substance to burn, is a chemical property. Chemical properties can only be measured or observed when a chemical change is taking place.
