What the Bible Says about

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23 NIV “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 NIV

The Definition and Description of SIN The Greek word for “sin” is hamartia The literal meaning is “to miss the mark” (Ill – Archery) When we go beyond God’s will, or don’t go far enough, or veer away from the truth into error, we sin All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23

The Definition and Description of SIN 3 common ways we commit sin 1. By disobeying God’s Law – 1 John 3:4 2. By failing to do the good we know we ought to – James 4:17 3. By going against our conscience, even if what we’re doing is not wrong in and of itself – Romans 14:23

The Different Kinds of SIN There are internal as well as external sins The external acts of sin are obvious – Galatians 5:19 But there are also internal sins of the mind and heart – Galatians 5:20-21; Matthew 5:21-30; Mark 7:20-23

The Different Kinds of SIN Some sins are worse than others, but ALL sin is bad! There are several lists of sins found in the Bible – Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 4:25-31; Colossian 3:5-10 Murder is obviously worse than telling a lie but they both can land a person in Hell! – Revelation 21:8; 1 John 5:16-17

The Nature and Consequences of SIN Sin is deceitful and destructive! It makes big promises but doesn’t deliver – Hebrews 3:12-13 It lulls us in and then destroys our lives! (Ill - boiling a frog) It can destroy a good name, character, health, relationships, work, finances; it will destroy your life if you let it! Sin is progressive – Psalm 32:1-7

The Nature and Consequences of SIN There are many consequences of sin It causes misery and heartache – Mark 5:1-20 It enslaves us – John 8:34; Romans 6:15-18 It separates us from God – Isaiah 59:2; 1 Peter 3:7-8 It leads to spiritual death – Romans 6:23; James 1:13-15

The Cure for SIN Jesus came to deliver us from sin – Galatians 1:4 He came to free us from the power of sin – John 8:31-32 He died to pay the penalty for our sin – Isaiah 53; Romans 3:23-26 He gave us His Spirit so that we could overcome sin – Galatians 5:16-18; 1 John 4:4; Philippians 4:13

The Cure for SIN We must Trust and Obey Jesus! Humble yourself and put your faith in Jesus – John 3:16; 8:24 Take sin seriously! – Galatians 6:7-8 Live a life of obedience! – 1 John 1:8-9 – 2:1-3; 5:18-20

“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in him who is true – even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” 1 John 5:18-20 NIV
